Why do uneducated people homeschool?

Your home country is probably a backwards country and that's why you're here. You may try to learn and adapt in a less judgemental manner.

Well, except that they’re allowed to vote…

...as is their right. Perhaps we should revert to having only white, male landowners be allowed to vote. Or some other demographic you find acceptable.

LOL. It sounds like PPs country understands the value of education, and what a disservice it is to society to have a large of contingent of completely uneducated people. Sadly, we are living with the effects of that reality here.

They basically dropped out. The girl had a baby at 15.

You mean in public school?

I thought the point of public school education, up to the age you can drop out, is to produce educated voters, thus to support our democracy. We have people too ignorant to vote, democracy is at risk.

Ironically for the anti-homeschoolers, this is true.

I think some people do it because the schools near them are terrible. Even if they don't have a high education they feel their kids will be less influenced by kids who do drugs, get into gangs, and that sort of influence. A lot of learning is peer education and if your peers aren't into education then it might be better to wait to enter the public school system when you have a better foundation and can get into honors courses and the like. Also, the mom may not be able to get a high paying job anyway.

My 3 nephews were "home schooled" to hide terrible abuse and lived in a 1 bedroom apartment. We tried to get custody of them but lost. My MIL ended up raising them but could only have them if she did not enroll them in public schools. My MIL went broke enrolling them in great enrichment programs, supplemental online schools and curriculums. All 3 will have gone to college once the youngest starts in the fall. They turned out great but what a life.

Why don’t you just ask them?

Have you met people from anywhere else who homeschool? I might try broadening my reach for a fuller picture of what’s possible.

The kids absolutely would be bullied.

How can you say that with such confidence? What percentage of poor white people in a majority black school do you know for a fact to have never been bullied? I know of several, it's almost always racially motivated, and pretty much impossible to have anything done due to the optics of the situation.

I know so many in the second category!

Germany, for example, doesn’t allow homeschooling. It’s not a backward country at all. In fact, I remember a case where a German family sought asylum in the US, in order to be able to homeschool their children. They actually got asylum. Hilarious!

Imagine Germans not wanting their government to indoctrinate their children. Crazy talk!
