Is this true? If so, that's infuriating that the EV buses can be funded but Wootton hasn't been able to get < $100M for repairs. The repairs are more critical than EV buses.

Kamala Harris thought EV buses were important, so I guess MCPS was in good company.

It’s not like EVs have a problem operating in cold temperatures and won’t be able to keep stranded kids warm. Just give little Johnny/Janey an extra pair of gloves.

I’m all for keeping Wootton on Wootton Parkway and holding MCPS accountable for poor financial decisions but making unsolicited references to Harris a year into an administration most people in this county reject is not a good look for our community and sends the wrong message about why we want to keep the school where it is. Maybe place those grievances elsewhere because they’re not doing us any favors.

Well there you have it... Dr. T was asked pointedly about the FAKE "Rockville Recommendation" (aka Option G) during the Jawando Education Budget Forum tonight and if he was reconsidering it for his recommendation and he said "absolutely not". It's giving... I appreciate the offer but I'm just not interested.

Taylor is never going to pursue Option G. The only chance it has is if the board itself takes the side of those who are arguing for it.

One of the big hurdles with Rockville’s argument is that it suggests Crown be filled/opened as a full school upon inauguration of a new Wootton building on Wootton parkway. If done that way, it would leave the county with no holding school for subsequent high schools which need renovation after Magruder/Wootton. So the superintendent won’t be too thrilled about that.

Not surprised. He made political seals for Option H back in November. He won’t show even a hint of reconsideration. He is doing everything to “stay bought”.

- Wootton HS has been in a state of neglect for a decade+. They have testified at almost every single BOE meeting that Wootton needs to be redone/repaired. Kids could no longer wait, BOE was neglectful
- Be in 2025, we are broke as a state and county, MCPS pillaged due to neglect, we hire a competent Superintendent to fix the ship, he's actually good. DOGE causes contraction in the county because Maryland/MoCo largely rely on Federal funding. The county population is actually declining and people that can actually afford to live in Wootton don't have kids or their kids already graduated
- Be heard by the Superintendent, Wootton can't wait, the conditions are so bad. A compromise solution actually appears - Woottton @ Crown. Wootton HS would actually remain in tact while not having to wait another decade to get a brand new state of the art school.
- Every school in the Wootton cluster goes and has room with the exception of Cold Spring (they don't care because they get to go to Churchill). Notice how Wootton PTSA isn't even advocating for them anymore in any of their testimonies - it's no longer about keeping the cluster together
- The record should show that when the initial option for Wootton at Crown came up, Wootton PTSA wanted to take a neutral position, in fact, it was seen as a WIN. However, the bullying and anger has won over to try and have Wootton fixed. It is no longer a dire issue to the point where students can't breathe, can't go to school, don't want to use the bathrooms because the conditions are so bad. We can fix Wootton with patch work, we don't want a new school anymore.
- They hold a town hall, there is an angry mob of people - people are scared to speak up about the options - there is no point in even speaking about the county budget situation or the realities of Wootton - it is an actual horrible horrible environment for kids. Many people who are angry don't have kids that are even in school anymore
- The claim is Rockville will chip in money to fix Wootton, go with hybrid option. This seems like a great solution, new school costs $300M. Fixing up a school costs ~$50-$100M.
- Ignore the fact that there is roughly only 500 students that are within the walking zone of Wootton, Wootton HS population is ~1800. Ignore the fact that Rockville is up in arms, but Wootton actually draws from North Potomac, Gaithersburg, and Rockville. No one else's opinion matters in this.

Wootton can now wait, but they need money to fix the school, apparently Rockville politicians will find money. Let's put these politicians on the record and ask households who are zoned for Richard Montgomery, Rockville HS, Magruder, Twinbrook if they are willing to pay an increase in taxes to fix Wootton when there is a brand new HS being built already opening in 2027.

Let's put Senator Kagan on record that she is speaking out only for Rockville and not for Gaithersburg, Fields Rd, Lakewood communities.

Let's put the county council and executives on the record that in a time where taxes are going to be raised because again WE ARE BROKE - that Wootton HS will not accept a new school where the ENTIRE CLUSTER gets to move to a BRAND NEW SCHOOL that they have been advocating about and instead let's ask CLARKSBURG, POOLESVILLE, WHEATON, GERMANTOWN, SILVER SPRING communities if they are willing to have an increase in their taxes to pay for a Wootton renovation.

I want everyone to read this who don't have a dog in this fight to ask yourself if you are willing to see an increase in your taxes to pay for a Wootton remodel when Crown exists.

Don't worry.. Kagan will post her outraged response to this by this time tomorrow. Her social media is seeing more action than... ever?!? Thriling times

I find it gross that I have been seeing MAGA politicians that should never even have a platform by the irreparable harm they have caused our region get a platform because they are all jumping on this Wootton issue. Even people who aren’t even in the Wootton area are saying if you vote for me I will do XYZ. How low will we go to get what we want?

Don’t want to derail the thread, but the analogy is apt because the motivations are the same. As you likely know, there was a real push for EV school buses by the prior administration, as well as democrat-led state and local governments. In the case of MCPS, it demonstrates a failure to comply with procurement procedures in a rush to support the then-prevailing view that EV was a reliable technology for widespread school bus deployment. This turned out to be very technologically and fiscally unwise. As a consequence, and as noted by the PP, the money spent on EV buses could have been spent renovating schools (including Wootton).

So the analogy fits, even though you seem to be strongly aligned with the actions of the prior administration and strongly opposed to the actions of the current one.

PS. I’m not a fan of the current administration either.

What does this have to do with MAGA? I suppose it gives them a cudgel to beat up MCPS for undermining Wootton through this ill-conceived plan. You must admit that it’s a self-inflicted wound because of how MCPS went about making various decisions with intentional opaqueness. Indeed, MCPS continues to disregard community concerns, causing the outrage to grow louder, making it a ripe opportunity to jump on the bandwagon. Combine that with how the recent shooting incident was handled and you have a MCPS wearing a metaphorical “kick me” sign on its back.

Um yeah that's the point here - it's a bandwagon. Thanks?

Look, this isn't about money, its about personal beliefs and politics. Wootton makes sense to go to crown. There is a state mandate that buses have to be replaced after so many years. The electric bus situation was sickening. But, they are making serious cuts to special education and other areas, far more concerning. They refused to keep the virtual school open and expand it to allow students to take courses not offered at their home schools and that cost was pretty minimal when you look at the overall budget.

You should fight against regional program then as it’s not fiscally responsible and going to get the county bankrupted. Wootton is just an easy target here but closing it doesn’t save you from tax hikes.

+1

I feel like this whole Option H was introduced late to be a distraction from the logistics involved with transportation and implementation of the regional programs.

Taylor is continuing the sickening electric bus arrangement even after the contract expired. He is wasting hundreds of millions of dollars. You think that is a trivial amount of money?
