Taylor's Feb Rec for Crown Boundary Study

I don't think Wootton has much to complain about.

Quince Orchard is obviously to he happiest with the boundaries.

Northwest is the big loser.

Northwest got sacrificed to create another high performing school at Quince Orchard.

So is the Poolesville magnets gone in the new region model?

Poolesville magnets stay, but only serve their region. When I chatted with the MCPS staff, I was told that the seats for Humanities, SMACs, and Global Ecology would stay the same.

QO is a loser with the regional programs; QO is in a region with Gaithersburg, Magruder, and Watkins Mill and not Poolesville.

Watkins Mill already has an IB set up, but SMACs and Humanities will have to be stood up from scratch and both will be at Gaithersburg.

What program will QO establish in the regional program?

Assuming Wootton moves to Crown:
QO gets Music, Theater / Technical Theater, Medical Science with Biotechnology, and Clinical Healthcare: Medical Assistant.

If Crown opens as a new high school
QO gets Humanities and Critical Languages, Cultures, and Global Connections instead of the medical programs.

Correction, SMACS will be at Gaithersburg, Humanities will be at Watkins Mill along with the IB and Critical Languages, Cultures, and Global Connections.

Under the regional program, it looks like Gaithersburg HS is set up as the tech high school (SMACS, Cybersecurity, Digital Communication: Animation and Game Design), while Watkins Mill will be the Humanities high school

Agreed. It makes the most sense fiscally, especially when considering declining enrollment. They will get a brand new building and no need to open a 27th HS.

This Wootton whiner can’t wait to spend your taxpayer money in court. Great job proposing something the courts will say is illegal. But then again mcps sure does love wasting $ on lawsuits!

My guess is if a lawsuit is filed, MCPS will be forced to get more community input, perform more studies, and present its recommendations again in a few years. Crown will get filled by kids from Gaithersburg to justify building it. Wootton will get a few coats of paint, and the status quo will continue. In a few years, Crown enrollment will stabilize and Taylor will realize he needed Wootton as a permanent school after all. He will then take credit for everything that went well, deny responsibility for putting everyone through this mess in the first place, and retire to widespread applause.

Not if, when the lawsuit is filed.

What would the basis of a lawsuit be here? Not being dismissive, just genuinely curious what the argument would be.

Taylor wants to be gone before then. And let his successor clean up his mess.

You’re probably right. He wants to be gone right after the Wootton at Crown ribbon cutting ceremony where he gives the speech of his career.

Wootton families allege this is a closure, not a move, and that MCPS engaged in arbitrary and capricious behaviors to make it happen. They have a point because MCPS is moving the boundary at the same time to disguise the closure.
