It's okay. It's not fashionable but it's inoffensive. A little figure skater-y but that's a standard evening wear look. Her hair looks weird and I think she should have worn it up.

On the subject of her hair, I appreciate that she doesn't dye it -- I have a similar amount of gray and don't dye it either. But it really wouldn't take that much effort to make her hair look smooth and shiny and healthy. Again, I have similar hair and it can easily look as hers does (and often does like that when I'm just dropping off kids at school or going to the beach or something) but it doesn't take that much effort to make it look very nice. And that's just me at home doing a hair mask and giving myself a blowout with some midrange products to keep it smooth. It's what I do if I'm meeting with clients, going to a party, or having my photo taken for something. I'm not getting highlights or having extensions put in or anything -- just putting a little extra time and effort into my hair so it looks nice in a situation where looking particularly professional or photogenic is helpful.

She can do what she wants but it's so weird to me that she wouldn't want to just look a bit more polished. We have the technology!

Except that she *does* look polished. Very much so. Your obsession with her hair as compared to… yours… is bizarre.

I’m sorry. I think she’s beautiful, the dress was tasteful, and I’m as conservative AF, but you can’t possibly call someone with that many flyaways “polished”.

I don’t see flyaways in the ball gown photo. Dp

I see them. In the back. They are there.

That's how much of a rookie/unprepared she is for her role, she doesn't even have a headshot for the White House website.

I asked this during convention but no one responded- how much of her makeup/hair/clothing issues are a function of real life versus TV life. Meaning, if we saw her in real life, we’d think she looks like nice. But with the professional lighting, cameras, etc, the mistakes become more glaring. Or things like a normal amount of makeup end up looking like none.

Maybe she doesn’t want the glam up and wants to visibly be different from this pack - signifying she’s there, supporting her husband, but she’s not one of them

There's a happy medium between looking like a blow up doll and looking like you just woke up.

Her ball gown was very cheap looking. The sparkly points sticking straight up on the bust line look like a tacky prom dress. Hopefully she gets a good stylist not Melania’s)

I think the ball gown is a huge improvement over the sweetheart strapless dress - the top fits her. She looks great - how can you compare with Melania who want to look "high-fashion"? Usha looks pretty and younger and comfortable.

I cannot stand anything about her or her husband otherwise!!

Omg, those photos are something else. Trump looks positively sinister ( I guess he wanted to look tough? Lol), JD looks happy-go-lucky, Melania’s photo looks like it was taken from a photo shoot that took place at least a decade ago, and Usha’s photo looks like it was an afterthought, as though some low level staffer was tasked with finding a photo of her and they just went with the first thing that came up when they googled her.

I absolutely love the pink coat. But the ball gown was sad, looks like a prom dress from 2012. I’m not blaming her at all, I agree that she is not used to this type of scrutiny. She will improve. She also needs to work on her makeup for photography. This will improve as well.

Melania also has access to money that Usha doesn’t. Plus she’s spent decades focusing on how she looks, while Usha was off using her brains. (Except for when she used her brain to link up with Vance.)

The Melania photo is from 2016 or maybe even earlier.

Oh come on. This HAS to be Usha's mom or sister lol.

DP. If you don’t realize there is a chance JD wins two terms and that a majority supports and likes her husband and therefore her, you are not paying attention.

Of course we realize there is a chance. As someone just said, there is a chance anything could happen. Politics are wild lately. He could very well win, he could very well lose. I'm not interested in making blanket claims.

Heard a great description of JD Vance today, that he's MAGA with a suburban accent. Meaning he doesn't have Trump's baggage and more respectability in the suburbs. Don't underestimate the potential power of this, but you are also right that four years is an eternity in politics. Still, looking forward to their first official Diwali photo as a VP couple.

I don't think the Trump administration ever acknowledged Diwali before. What makes you think they will now just because the VP's wife is Indian-American? There will be little to no discussion of her heritage in the next four years.

Anyone else find it funny that the party that hates on immigrants and POC has a POC Second Lady and both First and Second Lady are immigrants?

They will pretend Aisha is white as will she. She is Brahmin so maybe that is enough.

I can't stand Usha or her demented husband but she was born in California. Her parents weren't citizens at the time of her birth, I don't think, but she is not an immigrant.

I would have to see her birth certificate. Maybe she lost it wherever Obama lost his...

A few different shots of the dress and hair:

The original version of this dress from Reem Acra had sleeves so that the detail at the neckline continues over the arms. I prefer how that looks though I understand why a non-model would choose to get rid of the sleeves. Usha has nice arms but the sleeves might have been constricting or looked less flattering. It does make the dress look a bit more basic though.

I dislike Usha's hair here because you can tell there is a ton of product in it to sweep it up off her face and keep it in place, but it's technically down. The effect is looks stiff and weird to me. I think she should either have worn it down but soft (not plastered back) or gone for a dramatic updo with every hair in place. Also despite all the product you can see some of the hair at the bottom making a break for it. It's hard for that not to happen with a hairstyle like this, especially when dealing with inclement weather and having to get in and out of cars going to multiple events. I think an updo that they just shellacked into place would have been the better call.

In her write up on inauguration fashion, Rachel Tashjian at the Washington Post seems to think Usha Vance looked most traditional at the swearing in of all the prominent Republican women -- more like what First Ladies of the past have worn.

I agree with this, including the poor fit and slight frumpiness. With the exception of Jackie Kennedy, First/Second Ladies are usually a little bit frumpy. Even Nancy Reagan went for the frumpiest, most conservative version of that "ladies who lunch" look in the 80s. I think frump is an easy way for a First or Second Lady to communicate that she is respectful of the occasion but isn't trying too hard to be the center of attention.

Michelle Obama got a lot of flack for being insufficiently frumpy even though honestly, she went out of her way to be much frumpier than she clearly prefers while in the White House -- her fashion since leaving the WH shows just how much she held back.

Usha is definitely trying to communicate "very demure, very mindful" with her fashion. Not a fashion plate. She does not have Melania's or Ivanka's aspirations in this respect at all. She just doesn't want to offend and that's about it.

Michelle dressed like a harried business executive and mother of two young children before Obama ran for president. She didn’t wear much makeup, had a very simple hairstyle and wasn’t into fashion. She was extremely plain, but she got a real makeover for the campaign and has continued to try new and more daring looks. She looked younger when Obama left office than she did a decade earlier. She didn’t hold back during the WH years; she stepped up.

How is JD standing in this photo? One leg facing one direction and the other opposite.
He has an unusual gait too, sends gaydar vibes in many ways.

Her hair looks terrible.

It’s better with the sleeves. Still did not love this dress. Noticed it’s from the “empowered woman” collection.
