So, numerous historical sources don't necessarily agree that "slavery" is the number one reason the Civil War was fought.

This is from the PBS.org website:

What led to the outbreak of the bloodiest conflict in the history of North America?

A common explanation is that the Civil War was fought over the moral issue of slavery.

In fact, it was the economics of slavery and political control of that system that was central to the conflict.

A key issue was states' rights.

Poor Nikki Haley actually thinks she's speaking to people who studied and did their homework during American history class, not people who think in terms of one word answers.

States rights to.....keel slavery legal.

Please.

Exactly. There was no other “state’s right” at issue. Just slavery. So yes, the war was about slavery and nothing else.

+1

The white supremacists can tart it up with as many words as they like; the only state right the traitor states were interested in was protecting their right to own humans.

Perhaps, but she has shown herself to be weak and feckless. How will she deal with all the crises that a U.S. president deals with on a daily basis?

We've trusted Trump and Biden with these daily responsibilities for the past 7 years. They've given us nothing but wars, debt, and instability. Way past time for a real president that isn't 30 years past their prime. Haley isn't our best option but there are a half dozen governors or former governors out there that we should be voting for instead of the elderly odd couple.

Haley is seeming pretty dumb lately: https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/18v7sim/nikki_haley_confuses_basketballer_caitlin_clark/

What if she confused people like this in a diplomatic setting? She's completely unqualified.

States' freedom and rights TO DO WHAT, NIKKI?

What a complete fail. Nikki Haley is a total disgrace.

She’d pardon Trump. She’s wholly and completely unserious and unfit. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/12/31/desantis-haley-pledge-pardon-trump-if-hes-convicted/

She tries to please everyone, can’t handle the liberal media, so no way she can be the leader of the free world.

By the way under the 13th Amendment slavery still exists in the US. Can be enforced against those in prison.

Prisoners should be made to work and earn their own keep rather than prisons being paid for by taxpayers. Anyone who says that's cruel and unusual punishment is an idiot, because the rest of us have to work and earn our own keep.

My speculation is that beginning with Kissinger era of his basically via his dual role as Sec State and Chief of NSC, the engine that has been primed in thos country is not our democratic institutional systems but the nexus of CIA/DNI, military contractors, communications spyware and lobbyists draining away generation after generation of people who could have lead this country to a better future to instead just focus on narrow interest of accumulating their 1% 'er status and attempt to dominate abroad.

Of course, what has been sacrificed is America's reputation not just in global south ( which they don't care about ), but among our Allies, the middle class in America, aspects of our infrastructure ( roads, bridges, electrical grid, schools, health care - basically anything that is not military or spyware related) and , ultimately the undermining of our civil institutions: Congress ( the Johnsons , the Majory Taylor Greenes) , SCOTUS ( Thomas, Alito ) and the lobbyist revolving door in Washington half of whom work for Saudi Arabia despite their attacking us on 9/11.

So, here it is the eve before 2024 election and the choices are: 1) a rapist/ fraudster and fascist 2) an Octogenarian in/out of mental acuity whose Nose is so far up Israel's A** that his last public act as POTUS is going to be to arm, fund and support Genocide or 3) A light weight SC Gov of Indian descent who at her core seems to miss the fact that every political idea she supports would reject her parents on the basis of their ancestry

I was enjoying the truth and good reasoning in your post up until the unnecessary mentions of your stance on Israel and Haley's Indian ancestry.

The "rights and freedoms" thing is pretty bogus.

CSA constitution did not have that many additional rights and freedoms, and in fact took some away.

CSA Constitution explicity protected the right to keep slaves and prohibited any law that would inhibit the right to own slaves, and that is a central and recurring theme throughout several Articles.

CSA Constitution did say state legislatures and courts could override federal law, and restricted federal government from collecting tariffs - but beyond that, that's pretty much it.

CSA Constitution limited the President to a single term, and took away veto powers in appropriations bills

CSA Constitution Article 14 only protected Judeo-Christian religion and explicitly outlawed practice of any non-Judeo-Christian religion.

CSA Constitution also took away voting rights from anyone who owes back taxes, receives public subsidies, or is in the middle of bankruptcy proceedings.

One interesting part of the CSA Constitution is that it had a process for removing Judges. Wish we had such a process, so that we could clean up our clearly corrupt SCOTUS.

The heck with what MAGAS like. We need more GOP leaders to be open and honest with how they really feel about Trump. I'm baffled by how loyal our Republican and Democrat politicians and voters can be to candidates that are clearly not their party's best option. The sane part of the GOP needs to tell MAGA and Trump to sit down and shut up and our influential Dem leaders need to be more vocal about there wishes for Biden to step down. Speak up people or else you will be led by someone that is clearly unfit to for such a powerful job until January of 2029!
