How far away do you need to be from DC to be safe from a nuclear attack?

You’re going to have to survive with a bunch of MAGA lunatics running around. Good luck.

The MAGA people I see around me are all decent, capable, law abiding family people. I don't agree with their politics but some of you have a very warped perspective of Trump voters in flyover.

Nope. Hi, Trumper! Let me guess, anonymous board so you “voted for Biden.” Suuuuuuure you did.

DP

I live in MD, so I can vote my conscience. I wrote in Bernie (again), because the party shafted him (again). Given the hypothetical choice right now between Joe Biden and Trump, I’d now prefer to have Trump. I’m sorry that angers you but that’s how I feel. At this point I’m definitely willing to admit that I felt safer during Trump.

BS you are full of it. You felt safer with a "president" who idolized dictators? A "president" who stole documents from the WH. A "president" who destroyed notes from a meeting with Putin. A president who planned and cheered on January 6th? That made you feel safe as an American. You are no Bernie voter-you are a troll. Shut off FOX!

+1

Totally full of it.

This article is somewhat basic but has some interesting things to know. For example, don’t use conditionr in your hair, because it can cause radiation to bind more tightly.

Technically the radiation itself isn’t binding to your hair - it’s the fallout dust that is binding. Radiation is a form of energy that is being emitted by unstable isotopes as they decay into stable isotopes. Radiation itself is just a physical manifestation of energy transfer, like sound, light or heat.

I agree that if it happens it will likely be fast, bright lights, etc. I am a planner so I would like to promptly stop working my bs job and interacting/dealing with my bs coworkers if sudden death is imminent. It's not the death that concerns me but doing bullshit while we wait.

Why do threads get locked?

How far away from DC would be safe from a nuclear bomb? Are we taking like a few miles, like silver spring, or dozens of miles, like Gaithersburg or somewhere in Virginia. Would like to stay in MD if possible.

There's not going to be a nuclear war, idiot

Are you unaware that there is an absolute lunatic in charge of thr 2nd largest nuclear arsenal on the planet? It os about at bad as allowing the schizophrenic homeless person on the street corner in charge of that.

You have absolutely no idea if Putin is going to have a psychotic break and fry the planet.

Right? It is not like he can nuke us all by himself.

While I'm not saying this couldn't happen, we also have stop assuming that people in Russia are thinking like Americans.

Some of you ashamed no idea.

I'm eastern European and am in a lot of social media groups with Russians. Many of them see absolutely nothing wrong with what aputin is doing and don't see the problem. They are so brainwashed with propaganda. They think thr what is out to get them.

We’ve booked it for 21 days… I guess if there’s an attack it won’t matter at that point and we’ll just stay there. There’s not much around it, and it’s miles and miles from anywhere that would seem even remotely important. Closest “city” is Roanoke, and that’s almost 45 miles away. That seems like the best we can do on short notice. We both WFH and are familiar enough with home schooling thanks to the pandemic that I think the kids will be ok for a while. They’re too young to really understand this, so as long as they’ve got stuff to keep them occupied I think they’ll manage ok….. I never believed we’d be in a mess like this a year ago. It’s just inconceivable. I just can’t even fathom it.

What was the deciding factor? I would like to leave for a bit as well and I’m trying to convince my spouse. We may leave out of the country if need be.

What Putin said yesterday. Or rather, how he looked when he said it. Something’s up with him. He’s changed somehow. He’s always been a monster, but even his eyes look different now. Like he just doesn’t care. He got backed into a corner and started a war to save face. Now I think he knows it’s all going to fall apart, and I really do think he’ll launch missiles out of sheer spite. If he’s going to lose, why not take the world down with him, kinda deal. I wonder if he has a terminal illness? I don’t know, but we’re getting out. If nothing comes of it, well the worst thing is that we paid for 3 weeks in a shabby looking 2 bedroom cabin in the middle of nowhere. I’ll take that gamble.

My dh & I said the same thing. Dead eyes and a different palor. He’s also notorious for the plastic surgery and Botox and he’s let himself go with wrinkles on his forehead. We wondered if he has an illness?

Back in November 2020, there was an article in The Sun (so make of it what you will) of a political science professor in Russia claiming Putin had Parkinson’s and also cancer, the latter which he underwent surgery for in February of that year. The professor said he had a source close to the Kremlin. They denied it, obviously claiming Putin was in excellent health. There’s been numerous rumors and speculation swirling around his health for years. Back in 2012, if I remember correctly, it was claimed he had spinal cord cancer and at one time rumors of pancreatic cancer. There’s been reports that he’s been taking steroids, whether anabolic steroids or corticosteroids isn’t clear but the latter would make sense for an illness. People have also pointed out that his face appears different, equating it with steroid moon face.

As for the Parkinson’s rumor, if you consider what Marco Rubio said the other day about some neuro/physiological thing going on with Putin then this may be what he’s hinting at. For the spinal cord cancer rumor from years ago, Putin as well as close associates of his have mentioned him dealing with back pain in the past on more than one occasion and supposedly he had back surgery at one time. His dad also had some sort of cancer (maybe spinal cord?) so the back pain was brushed off as hereditary rather than cancer but who actually knows.

There does seem to be some evidence that could potentially support an illness though. For instance, the fact that he has been severely isolating himself during Covid, including going a bit to the extreme like donning a hazmat suit, could suggest that it’s because he’s high risk and knows it. I know people keep questioning whether being in isolation made him ‘go mad’, but that’s ignoring the important question as to why he decided to go into extreme isolation in the first place. As for the Parkinson’s, observers have noticed shakiness and slower responses (physically slower as well as not being as quick-witted) the last few years compared to how he was in the past.

It’s also curious that he introduced and rushed through legislation in Russia to give him immunity from any prosecution (and I think allow him to still remain in parliament after/IF he leaves office) until he dies. There’s also been rumors that he’s been preparing his daughter to take over his role. Factor in all of this and it seems like it’s not unlikely that he knows his time is limited. Of course, I’m not saying any of this is completely true, as these are all just rumors and speculations via reports. In any case, I’m not sure we’ll ever ACTUALLY know because the Kremlin denies everything. If any of it is true, however, it makes the threats seem even more alarming whether it’s a case of him being a loose cannon due to illness(es) and/or any treatments regarding it/them OR it could be that he’s lashing out because he’s in a mindset where he figures he no longer has anything left to lose and his time is limited — sort of, if I’m going down, I’m taking everyone else down with me, so to speak. In either case, further escalation is very possible if the rumors are, in fact, true.

I can’t decide who the more doomsday ones are — the ones panicking and prepping or the ones saying they want to be at the epicenter of any potential blast so they will be obliterated before even knowing what hits them. Lol

Regardless, I think the latter are more realistic than the former.

On the flip side, there are the ones completely and totally minimizing any threat by mocking the ones who are worried, even if they’re going a little overboard with their worry. These people, who are belittling the worriers calling them kooky, idiots, etc. are the worst ones yet. Ironically, they’re the ones who will die first because they have zero awareness. It’s similar to the people who said they weren’t scared of Covid and then end up in a hospital bed hooked up to a ventilator, eventually succumbing to it.

Realistically speaking, the threat does exist; but it’s important to understand the extent of the threat. Miscalculations are bad for everyone. No one should go into complete meltdown-panic mode, but it’s also unrealistic to completely brush everything off claiming there’s no threat whatsoever. Panic prevents you from thinking clearly, while denial impedes you from being sensible enough to take proper precautions. Being pragmatic is essential in any crisis type of situation. Being too far on either end of the spectrum is likely to get you killed. Level-headedness is where you want to be.

I just realized the other day that I haven't seen a fallout shelter sign in a public building in I don't know how long. I remember even my elementary school was designated one and had the sign. I don't even think my kids would know what the sign is or what it means.

Crazier still, I grew up here back in the 70/80s and I can still recall that they would do air raid siren tests occasionally.

Anyone a little extra concerned about the SOTU? Think Putin would do something today with everyone gathered?

Will it be like Designated Survivor?

I think cyber attacks are more imminent than a nuclear attack- in general but even more specifically now. So weve slowly been accumulating things that we would need in any emergency. This would have been normal in FL for my family due to hurricanes but I got out of the habit when I moved up here.

1. Ive started keeping the bathtub filled after my kid takes a bath so we have water to flush the toilet. Hes the only one who uses that tub so it isnt a big deal.
2. We keep 1/2 pack of toilet or paper towels in reserve.
3. We do laundry consistently so there are always a weeks worth of clothes- especially clean underwear.
4. We keep on top of Rx refills
5. We have $400-600 in cash around the house at all times
6. My son has a dairy intolerance so Im keeping 2-3 shelf stable milks at all times. I donate them when they get to 6 weeks from expiration and get a whole new batch. I also have rice, peanut butter, jelly, beans, nuts, protein bars, protein drinks, cereal, etc. Its part of our normal intake so these arent extraneous but I plan to always have a weeks worth as a buffer.
7. Keep an extra propane tank for the gas grill
8. I purchased solar lamps- one with a USB- in the event of power outage we will charge them during the day and use them at night, if needed.
9. Need to purchase a years worth of contacts and extra glasses for myself since my FSA just renewed.
10. I fill my gas tank when it hits 1/2 tank.
11. I have got an extra bag of dog food.
12. I have a couple days worth of bottled water.
13. Keep fruits like citrus apple grapes etc. in rotation so if the power goes out they last for a few days.

People are bored and being worried about a nuclear attack is making them feel alive again. That's all that this is.

Minus the lady who posted she literally booked an Airbnb to run away to…

Pretty sure that was a troll!

DP. Can we stop accusing everyone who does anything different from you a troll? Look, I also think she’s going off the deep end but you’re not much better. It’s the horseshoe effect. Instead of belittling people and labeling everyone who doesn’t agree with you a troll, maybe try to LISTEN to others and get some perspective. Jesus, no wonder the country is so divided. No one wants to listen to anyone anymore. Talk about a societal failure.

If he launches, the whole world is screwed. No place is far enough away, and as others have said - I’d rather die in the initial attack than live to die slowly in the apocalyptic aftermath.

It’s ironic that everyone was so keen to get the nukes out of Ukraine - where the majority of the USSR’s nukes resided - following the dismantling of the Union. The 1994 agreement between Ukraine, USA, UK and Russia promised Ukraine independence and ‘security assurances’ if they gave up the nukes. They trusted the agreement, and now they’re being betrayed by all parties in the most horrific way.

+100. Finally, some with some sense.

I just had a discussion with my cousin tonight about leaving the country and going where we have a second citizenship for a few weeks. We're on the fence.

On the plus side with all of the paranoids allegedly fleeing the area maybe we can start to shed more of the heightened covid restrictions and move more in line with the rest of the country

For real. Please stay wherever you flee too. Your panic is not needed here. I hope you don’t need to venture out of the house for anything. Covington is the complete opposite of DC. Report back how many masks you see. I’m going with zero.

The joke is the anti-mask crowd is the pro-prepper crowd too. They've been waiting for this.

+1,000,000

+a billion. They anti-mask/pro-prepper folks would also probably F up a post nuclear Holocaust society too by being super stupid.

It’s the plot of Idiocracy.
