Your remark followed my comment: "But both are better without phones."

A lot of the lobbying is from parents of younger kids - why do they think they get a say in what happens in high schools? They are also playing dirty by asking parents from Alexandria to fill out the APS survey in support of Away for the Day. They are trying to make it seem like there is more support than there really is.

Because their elementary students will be in high school one day.
I don't have elementary kids, but I still want APS to ban their phones and also to get rid of their iPads.

yeah but they don't know what they will want when their kids get to high school. i didn't want my kids to have their phones during elem and middle school either, but it's different now in high school.

you really have no idea what the differences are between a high school senior and a 6th grader? Come on.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. It seems that because there is very strong support for away for the day from conservative circles nationally, *some* have decided this is a political issue. Of course it’s not and I’m a true blue democrat who’s not in APE, lives in Arlington, has a HSer, and fully supports no phones. I think it’s wonderful that parents can agree across ideological lines, doing what is best to help our kids & schools, and we need to find more common ground. But I will get screamed at for being a liar who is actually the Trump-loving parent of preschoolers in Alexandria.

There are at least two of us (though my kid is in middle school)

middle school is different from high school

But both are better without phones.

Well, you don't have a kid in high school, so you really don't know. Why are you so bent on influencing policy in high school - something you don't know anything about yet?

I have a kid in high school and don’t pretend to know the best policy because I’m not in th classroom. But teachers overwhelmingly support them, and this seems like good policy.

Do you need the phone to read Macbeth? They don’t have calculators anymore in calculus?

I think we need more screentime in elementary schools. More use of ipads, not less. Start 1:1 in pre K.

You really have no idea how public school policy like this is formed. You keep suggesting that the parents could just decide because they have HSers and therefore they are the ones impacted and therefore it should be their decision. But, that’s never how APS or any other public school works. Can you imagine saying to parents: well, your kids are the only ones impacted by this boundary change so therefore you get to decide? Or this curriculum only impacts science in fourth grade so therefore we are only taking input from parents of fourth graders? The phone policy is not like where should we have prom this year. It’s a decision about how the academic environment is run across many schools. The schools are paid for by taxpayers who elect a school board who appoints a superintendent. You know you aren’t at a private school right?

This is such an odd response. In response to a question: "why do they think they get a say in what happens in high schools?" you responded -

"Because their elementary students will be in high school one day."

So it appears that you are the one who is confused and thinks that parents get to decide this. And you think elementary parents should dictate what happens in high schools even though you have zero experience with high schools.

No, I'm just citing a reason they think they get a say in what happens in high schools.
And they're right. They should have a say in what goes on in the schools their kids are going to be entering. We're not taking votes on individual policies every year.

You sound like an APE. The APE parents of younger kids are lobbying APS for away for the day in high schools, trying to make their "vote" count more than those of actual high school parents. Sit down parents of younger kids. You don't know what you don't know for high school. You got away for the day in middle schools and elem. Maybe be happy with that. How would YOU like it if high school parents come and lobby for MORE screen time in elem and middle schools?

Yeah, I don't believe you for an instant. But, I'll bite just to reinforce how stupid this is: your battery will wear out before you return to school. Next time, turn your phone off before you put it in the pouch. Meanwhile, surely you - or the adult in your home - can figure out how to put the pouch someplace away from where you're trying to sleep?

Why are you so mean to this student? Just because their post shows how dumb the pouches are. Grow up.

Because I don't believe it's a real student. What student, feeling exhausted and feverish, looks up a relatively old thread on DCUM to make this comment?
And if it is a real student, my comments about the battery and figuring out how to put it away out of hearing distance would remain the same.
