Phase 1: Research and Analysis
First round of community engagement. Review of enrollment data, capacity, programs, transportation patterns, and other planning factors. As many people expected, enrollment data will be a part of analysis. Elementary and middle schools that currently feed into these high schools will also be part of the analysis. This ensures aligned school pathways from elementary through high school whenever possible. This is interesting. I guess it’s possible that they move Fox Mill to Hughes and/or Crossfield to Franklin. |
| If the school board can move kids to a high school other than Skyview due to the need for backfilling… What if some Oakton kids get moved to South Lakes or somewhere else? That would take away the argument that they shouldn’t be forced to go to a new school with uncertain programming. They would have to come up with a different argument. We all know it’s about staying at Oakton at all costs, but I don’t know how compelling that argument is when clearly some changes are going to have to be made, and most people want to stay where they are. |
Most of Crossfield membership (Franklin Farm) is very close to Skyview--much, much closer than Oakton. Some of Crossfield is just as close to South Lakes as Skyview--and definitely closer to South Lakes than Oakton. Some of Crossfield is already at South Lakes. |
Thought moving part of Westfield and Chantilly into Skyview was pretty much guaranteed and the bigger questions were whether they’d move part of South Lakes or Oakton into Skyview as well and then move parts of Chantilly and/or Centreville to back fill Westfield. It’s seemed like most of the back and forth over the past several months has been whether Fox Mill or Crossfield made more sense to move into Skyview. |
It’s a new boundary study and of course they can move kids both in and out of Westfield if they want to. |
Problem: Meren won't let Fox Mill move. RIO seems to have some clout. But, Crossfield should move. |
| I am betting on the maps looking very similar to the old ones but including who moves from Centreville to Westfield. |
| Can someone explain what/who is RIO? |
Look, they need to populate Skyview and they may need to move some kids to Westfield if Westfield loses kids from Coates, Floris, and McNair. It’s a good bit less likely that they’d move so many kids out of South Lakes (maximum would seem to be Fox Mill and a bit of Floris) that they’d need to move kids into SLHS to compensate. I guess Meren could cut a deal to swap Fox Mill into Skyview so long as SLHS gets the rest of Crossfield in return, but they ended up making fewer boundary changes in the county-wide review than one might have anticipated, which suggests they’ll try to make fewer rather than more changes here as well. |
RIO = “Rooted in Oakton,” a group of Oakton parents, mostly at Crossfield, trying to make sure they stay at Oakton. |
I bet Crossfield will not move to Skyview. They may move to Franklin though. |
Meren is not playing nice with the Board or Reid, so I am not counting on them bending to her. A decent percentage of FMES rising 9th graders opted in to Skyview. A bunch of rising 10th graders moved. There is a group of FMES that want to move. Cross field has a large number actively trying to avoid moving. If you had to choose between two groups do you move the group asking to move or the group campaigning to not move? |
Meren doesn’t have veto power and she could agree to cede Fox Mill to Skyview if South Lakes gets the rest of Crossfield and maybe the Navy island in return. That would be a bit like the deal years ago to send Fox Mill from Oakton to South Lakes, in return for which Oakton picked up part of Chantilly. |
Nah, I think board members and Reid are just humoring them. |
Roughly 700 people who don't want Crossfield moved from Oakton. |
