So, a US senator is saying that we should consider a maternal mortality rate that excluding deaths of black women while also implying that there is an acceptable level of maternal mortality? Did I get that right?

This is sickening.

They're emboldened to say the quiet part out loud.

Black women don't matter to them. They don't count and their deaths don't count.

+1. I have zero respect for women who vote Republican.

I have zero respect for anyone who votes Republican.

I have zero respect for people who make sweeping generalizations.

Sweeping generalizations like all abortions for any reason need to be illegal?

.sweeping generalizations like all abortions for any reason should be legal.

DP here. I think it's better for Black, Latina, Chicana, Indigenous, you name it women to have the freedom to make decisions about what is best for themselves and their families. I don't think I know what's best, nor do I think you know.

As a black women, every time I give birth I know I’m at risk of dying. Given how terrible the outcomes are for black women, you can’t force them into a life and death situation. It has to be a choice. If you all truly care about black babies and their moms then freaking act like it and until then please take a seat.

I know, and I think you know too, that far too many BIPOC women die during their pregnancies and L&D. I know, and I think you know too, that far too many BIPOC children live in poverty. I know, and I think you know too, that BIPOC women love their children and families and are best-equipped to know what's right for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Enough with your paternalistic, "compassionate", white supremacy (and that's what this is regardless of your race). You are not protecting BIPOC babies by restricting the rights of their mothers.

The rest of his statement:

Now, I say that not to minimize the issue but to focus the issue as to where it would be. For whatever reason, people of color have a higher incidence of maternal mortality.”
