I know there are several abortion threads right now but I think everyone can agree that this deserves its own thread.

I think everyone can agree that this is a political earthquake. I think about 70% of the American population agrees with me that this is a terrible decision.

Nothing like this has ever leaked before. And tbh, I don't believe it. I don't believe it, I don't believe that this is the majority opinion that will issue. I think it was leaked (by whom?) in order to make it not issue.

Politico has seen the 98-page draft opinion. No, they’re not going to say that when they haven’t. Yes, it was effing leaked.

I don't believe a draft has ever leaked before. I've seen at least one opinion from a Supreme Court lawyer that it looks legitimate and like it was written by Alito. Hard to imagine it's faked but it's possible. A leak hoping for public outcry to get the actual decision softened seems more likely to me.

So what’s next? Conservative states have already made abortion inaccessible to most women already, creating hurdles and scare tactics that leave only 1-2 providers operating in some states. Do women/people who value womens’ health rise up? Do conservatives go full on handmaids tale? Is it going to be like 2 sets of rules-one for red states and another for blue? Or does nothing really change because they’ve mostly kept poor, rural women from getting abortions anyway, and they don’t really want to prevent “urban” babies from being aborted anyway?

If this country operated correctly then all the Justices who said explicitly that they would respect stare decisis in this matter during their confirmation hearings would get criminal referrals for lying to Congress.
