For example, when you order a steak well done and it arrives extra rare, should they give you a new steak or just cook that one further?
I had this happen to me where the outside was well done but about 3 bites in it was very red and oozing blood. So I told the waiter it was a tad undercooked. He took it back and brought the same steak that had 3 bites out of it and it was well done. I was fine with this but DH thinks that they are supposed to bring you a brand new steak with the problem fixed. Is this true? It seems like more work for the restaurant and that would be annoying. What have you noticed with this type of thing? |
| I don't know, because I would never order a steak well done. |
| Why should they ruin two pieces of meat instead of one? Restaurants don't like to destroy thier food by overcooking it as you wish. |
| I don't know...on one hand it's wasteful and would send food costs through the roof to throw away food every time someone complained. It's environmentally unsound. On the other hand it's kind of weird that they put eaten food on a communal grill where' they're cooking food for lots of people. That could be a health code violation. For me personally, I guess I'd be Ok w/ the same steak being recooked since I like my meat well and I hate wasting. But I'd be a bit skeeved by the germ thing even though germs really can't survive those temperatures. I don't know what is "proper." I guess "proper" would be to get a new steak since if a customer ordered it rare and it came well they wouldn't be able to redo that. |
| A very good restaurant should give you a new steak. |
| Every time I've done this, I've received the same steak back. |
+1 Putting an eaten from steak on the grill is kind of unsanitary |
Same. If they started from scratch for a well done steak it would probably take 20 Minutes. |
IF you buy it, it is not "destroyed". Why should they care how you like your steak prepared? |
If you think this is unsanitary, you have never worked in a restaurant. |
| If the problem is the steak is too rare, I'd expect the same one back. It's the fastest fix, and it's wasteful to start over. If it's way overdone, then yes, a new one |

A very good restaurant wouldn't serve well done steak.
|
| tangent…OP if you close your eyes and do a taste test of a well-done steak and a medium rare one, odds are you'll like the medium rare better. Tender and juicy and more flavor by far. My uncle did this with me once long ago and I ordered my steak rare to medium rare ever since. |
No germs could possibly survive the heat of the grill.
|
No kidding. But we knew that when she ordered it dry and tasteless. Know you are already getting the worst cut too, as it won't make any difference as it will be dry and gray by the time you get it. Best you can hope for is that it is well-seasoned. |
