Have to be catholic to get in to Georgetown Prep ?

No, although when we looked it was about 75% Catholic. The other 25% includes some athletes and international students.

Just so you understand your son will be in the minority and that the great majority of those who attend are from Catholic families that are actively practicing the religion. Mass is required. As will the parents that you meet.

The Prep boys largely hang out with or date girls from the Catholic girls schools.

There are probably other schools that are a better "fit".

It's true that non-Catholics are a minority at Prep. It is not true that the great majority of Prep families are actively practicing (attending mass at least once a week). To the contrary, Prep is considered "catholic lite" by some more devout Catholics.

Holton is the only single gender non-Catholic high school in MoCo, so every private boys school boy interacts with girls from the Catholic girls schools a lot. Plenty of non-Catholics at those schools too.

There are a few Jewish kids blatantly recruited to Georgetown Prep for athletics. YES its a Catholic school but its not nearly as religious as the previous previous poster points it out to be. He seems to think Prep is a school from the 1960's.

Prep is a school owned and controlled by a Catholic religious order. The overwhelming majority of its alumni and students and faculty are Catholics, with Irish Catholics being the dominant group.

I don't know who they are recruiting for athletics. But non-Catholics ought to go into this with their eyes open.

Your advice might be valid for the well to do non-Catholics, but, for the poor, Catholic schools are often the only option to failing public schools. Prep is in an affluent area, but Catholic schools in poor areas are often well over 50% non-Catholic. If you are poor and white or Asian don't expect schools like Sidwell, Holton, NCS, Maret or GDS to have any interest in you.

Some of the responses are so dumb. It doesn't matter what religion you are..no one is going to care/judge whatever. The idea that some girl is not going to date your son because he isn't Catholic is just plain silly. What you should decide is are you okay with your child going to mass and that sort of thing. We send our kids to an Episcopal school and we are not Episcopal and we are okay with our kids learning this religion. The only bump we have experienced is our kids not wanting to go to our religion's service because they feel they got enough religion at school. In the scheme of things this wasn't that big of a deal for me since I like all religions as long as there is a tie to a higher power so not really wed to following something specific but if you were observant in a religion differing from Catholicism and didn't want to take a chance that your child identified more with being Catholic over time...maybe this would bother you. I repeat though that no kids care what your religions is and no parents care..seriously let that part go.

I'm afraid we are just going to have to disagree on the facts. Our experience as a Prep family is that the great majority of our son's friends families at Prep are practicing Catholics. We certainly see a lot of them at Mass. Are there other Catholic schools where there are a greater percentage of practicing Catholics? I would be curious as to which schools these are.

We don't have daughters, so we wouldn't know what the current non-Catholic percentages are at Stone Ridge or Holy Cross or Holy Child or Visi. But I would be surprised if it's more than 5%. As to the presence of boys from other schools at the Catholic girls schools, our sons haven't reported the presence of Landon or St Albans boys at the events they attend.

Why are people on this forum so intent on inflating the numbers of non-Catholics at Prep or Gonzaga or the girls schools?

I have a son currently at Prep and know a lot of people at Stone Ridge. I have to disagree with the PP. We are Catholic but I've been surprised at how many non-Catholic students there are at Prep. Sure, the strong majority is Catholic but there are lots of families of other faiths, especially other Christian denominations, and all seem pretty comfortable and happy to be there. As long as you are open to the emphasis on the moral teachings of the Catholic Church -- well, I'd say not only open to it but welcoming of it -- then I think you'll be fine.

Stone Ridge seems even more diverse religiously -- friends who are parents there told me they get the impression that maybe only 60% of the girls are Catholic.

Prep is based on Jesuit tradition including the acceptance of all faith and religion. Yes the majority of students are catholic but a large number, including at least 50 Chinese students, are not. All students attend mass and participate in the retreat program without much resistance. A student need not have faith to believe in service, honesty, and forgiveness.

Does Stone Ridge give preference to Catholic students over non-Catholic students in the admissions process?

Jewish athletes? Really?

Prep is not as religious as some of hardliners think it is.

the majority of kids there are catholic but believe me there are tons of non practicing catholic families there as well as Jewish athletes recruited for a wide array of sports teams.
