As much as liberals want the US to be a communist country, this is isn't a communist country. You get what you paid for, not what you need or what you demand. You don't get to demand how the seat in front of you is used (unless you pay for that seat too).

Hey! I am a liberal and 100% pro your-seat-is-yours-to-recline.

They were flying from New Orleans to Charlotte, it's a 2 hr flight. No reason they couldn't have behaved like adults for 2 hrs.

My guess is he asked her not to recline and while, yes, she has the right to do so, she could have respected his request and sucked it up for 2 hrs, but no, she decided to be a jerk and recline. Now maybe he wasn't polite in his request and she kept her seat reclined just to prove a point and be a jerk, who knows. He still should not have been hitting her seat. That is juvenile and shows a complete lack of self control.

This sums the whole thing up perfectly.

But here's the thing - it is well within that woman's right to say no. I can politely ask you to give me $100, but you're not being a jerk or immoral if you decide to say no.

Lots of people here are rationalizing theft or extortion - the woman is in the right. We are entitled to that which belongs to us or what we paid for. We are not entitled to things that do not belong to us.

She isn’t ENTITLED to recline FFS. She paid for transportation.

If she can’t listen to the FA then she should be kicked off the flight.

Almost. I think the guy actually WAS perfectly polite in his request, and then the woman decided to still be a jerk and recline. The guy was clearly squashed, he asked nicely, it was only a 2 hour flight, and she decided to just do it anyway. That's why even the flight attendant thought she was a jerk.

If two hours is no big deal surely he can handle being a little cramped for that period of time

How do you know she didn’t pay for a seat assignment and chose a seat that reclines? When you select a seat that doesn’t recline (back row or in front of exist row) the airline informs you before choosing that seat that it doesn’t recline. So obviously they know people care about that sort of thing. She paid for a reclining seat. He should have paid for the exit row and then the seat in front of him couldn’t recline! Problem solved!

When you buy a ticket you aren’t guaranteed particular equipment or seat assignment.

You are if you pay extra for the exit row where the row in front of you never reclines. This PP has it right - he should always pay for the exit row and then stop throwing temper tantrums.

All I can keep thinking is I would have been kicked off the flight because I know I would have punched him in the face. I can't imagine if DH was there what his reaction would be. Maybe I'm just an angry person. She handled better than I would have.

All the people who claim they never recline - I call bs on that. On every flight longer than a puddle jumper, everybody reclines, even the tall people.

I don't ask everyone to stay seated at concerts so that I can see the stage better. And on an airplane I try to be courteous, but I recline. From what I've seen, so does everyone else.

I see it differently. The airlines ought to treat passengers better and space the rows farther apart so that we can all have enough space to recline. It's the configuration that's causing these problems.

Until passengers vote with their feet/wallets on this, the airlines will continue. It’s business. That does in no way excuse the man’s behavior.

You can't vote with your feet when all airlines are eliminating space. Seats shouldn't recline...they should reconfigure seats so the bottom moves forward to make it recline. That way, if you want to recline, then you sacrifice your own leg room.

Either way, I think the woman was a media whore who is trying to get paid. If she was really in pain and in danger, then she had many opportunities to un-recline her seat. I would assume that her health is the most important thing so she had options. I'm not excusing the guy's actions at all but she could've easily ended it by sitting up.

This seems like a nice reminder of how to use the recline feature:

This. If your seats are reclining seats, you are entitled to recline them.

People pay extra for window seats and seats with more legroom. The cheapest seats are the ones in the back with the least legroom, middle seats.

The man in the video got one of the cheapest seats if not the cheapest seat on the plane (last row, least room, no recline). And he was a big guy.

Don’t get that seat if you need more room.
