How will Wootton or RM be affected by new high school in Crown Farm?

They’ll get over it. Boundaries need to be adjust in the interest of the school system.

Why would it be in the best interest of the school system to bus all KF kids to Gaithersburg HS when the new Crown HS is closer?

Because half already go there and it's literally a drive right up 355. It's quicker to Gaithersburg than RM. Should have been done years ago.

What's embarrassing is that the board back in the day TURNED DOWN the option to build an addition 3/4th level (and keep unfinished) at RM when they were building it, as a back-up for all the increased housing. Our district is terrible at managing anything. We also don't force builders to dish out money and land for schools as a contingency of an agreement to build.

Because RM uses their IB program to keep up the numbers and keep it a "good" school.

It isn't. Moving KF to Crown would be a win for all involved. Moving students from nearby overcrowded schools to Crown would be a win for all involved. There are logical paths forward that make everybody happy.

It would not be a win for Gaithersburg HS which needs to add some higher income neighborhoods. GHS will lose some struggling areas to Crown and gain some (likely KF) from RM. Transportation will not have to cross 270.

GHS doesn't actually win anything by adding higher income neighborhoods, though. The people who go there are not asking for more higher income neighborhoods to be sent either.

They are going to need to fill the school that they are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to build, though, so it probably makes sense for all involved to put people who actually want to go there into it.

MCPS would like higher test scores there. The peoples wants are irrelevant.

Oh I understand there are definitely some officials who feel that way. I'm just articulating the obvious path forward that would be received most positively by people who actually have skin in the game. I'm optimistic that MCPS will be able to see the light, as opposed to pissing everyone off and motivating parents with resources against them for no reason, for no real gain, achieving an outcome that nobody actually asked for.

Which current GHS elementary schools are "struggling areas" which are not within the walk zone for GHS?

No, it really isn't. It's just about funding. MCPS has plenty of funds but chooses to spend it on electric busses and SEL or RJ training. Once all these pet causes are funded there isn't much leftover.

One of the first things MCPS should do in this study is publish detailed walk zone maps for every in-scope school.

RM is a good school beyond the IB program. It has King Farm, Fallsgrove, Ritchie Park, College Gardens, Woodley Gardens, etc. The number of kids who take and pass AP exams is very high there.

Any of those neighborhoods could be reassigned away from RM after the study.

Pretty sure the idea of KF/College Gardens being reassigned to Crown was an idea pushed by the six-figure CO staff at Hungerford. But if KF/College Gardens goes anywhere, it's more likely headed to Gaithersburg HS.

The idea of all of Fallsmead going to crown is equally self-serving since it's on Wootton Parkway (hint, it's closer to a different high school - can you guess which one?). Only a small jerrymandered sliver is in Crown the same way that a jerrymandered sliver is in CJMS.

RM wasn't even part of the original intended study, so if it's been added I'd out to MoCo Show who's got their fingers in the cookie jar.

And anyone who says "overcrowding" is a reason for Crown is fibbing. There was a thread about one or two years ago that went through the boundary study capacity charts. You could redraw boundaries on the county northern, western and southern boundaries pretty easily.

So the real question is whether the Hungerford CO crowd will monopolize Crown? I hope they're all fired before that happens. I'm sick of the CO treating MCPS as their own personal piggy bank. They gotta go.
