Elizabeth Holmes, CEO of Theranos, finally charged

Presumably to allow her to deliver her second child before going to prison.

I don’t really see how what she did is different from many startups. 11 years is insane for a crime for which nobody was physically hurt or even lost their savings a la madoff. They are making an example out of her (like Martha Stewart) and it funny because you never hear of men getting outsized sentences like this.

So totally agree

You are minimizing what she did to a ridiculous extent.

I wonder how they’ll cope. Will they not want the kids to see her in jail? Or will they expose them to prison waiting rooms? And will she try to claim some special circumstance to go to a “better” facility?

She was a fraud and corrupt individual for 15+ years you mean?

She deserves this sentencing - people died from falsified test results from her ‘invention’.

Hush if you don’t know what you’re talking about. NOBODY died. They couldn’t even find anyone who was physically harmed. The worst they were able to show at trial was that someone received a false negative pregnancy test and someone received bad blood work. That’s it. It really didn’t have major medical effects, only financial.

I do not believe this at all. She knew people were not getting cancer treatment because of her fake medical tests/devices. She didn't care one iota. Keep trying to minimize how evil this psycho is but the rest of us know better.

“ a woman who took a Theranos test was told she was miscarrying, when she was still pregnant. Other patients were given a false positive HIV test; and another was wrongly told to stop taking his blood thinning medication.”

She knew and didn't care. This is not your standard "white collar" crime.

Then start charging, convicting and sentencing the men. Doesn’t mean she gets to walk just because she’s a woman. She committed fraud with the extra special sauce of careless disregard for the health and safety of others.

Many patients have been affected by Theranos’ lab inaccuracies. And who knows how many have died.

Eleven years is not enough!

Because she continued after her own people told her that it wasn't possible to do what she wanted. She drove one to commit suicide instead of testifying in court.

She messed around with the health of people and threatened those who told her it wasn’t possible. Many other lives could have been lost if the whistle blower wasn’t the grandson of a US senator. And even he was threatened. This sentence is richly deserved.

Just tell us you're uncomfortable seeing a white woman who looks like you get a prison sentence you've deemed harsh.

She stole almost a BILLION dollars through sheer lies and fraud.

WTH? Her children would be better off never knowing her.

She didn’t steal it. It didn’t go to her bank account. She used it to try to change the world. She lied, and she failed, but she didn’t steal.

She didn’t try to change the world. She defrauded everyone in to thinking she had a novel medicine way to test blood. She stole a lot from the people who trusted her.

And what a psychopath for getting pregnant after she was convicted.

Exactly just because you want a kid doesn’t mean it’s fair to have one under these circumstances. This poor kids have to live most of their childhood without a mom and she knew this was a possibility.

This! What kind of monster produces two children just to get a lighter prison sentence. It’s so disturbing.

I don’t doubt that getting pregnant was part of her strategy, but I also think she realized that she’s in her late 30’s and was facing a fairly long prison sentence. She’ll be 50 when she’s released. This was probably her last chance to have another baby without using a surrogate.

Still all about her. What she wants and the heck with what she does to other people.

Not one iota of pity here. For the kids? Absolutely – although maybe it isn’t so bad that she won’t be raising them. For her? Nada. She’s a lying liar who lies and is only sorry she got caught. And when she did, she quickly got married and procreated, likely in hopes of lessening her sentence. She should have gotten more time, not less.

None died. There has been a thorough investigation to pin as much harm as possible on her and her partner.

Do you think 11 years is an excessive sentence for, say, a black cocaine dealer?
