Elizabeth Holmes, CEO of Theranos, finally charged

Anonymous
The founder of Theranos finally got charged with something substantial - federal criminal wire fraud.

I was so mad when SEC settled for just a $500,000 penalty fee. Any chance she'll get jail time?

I read a CNBC article today and I am appalled at the extent and volume and the times they defrauded, misrepresented, misled, lied, fabricated truths, etc. They remind me of Madoff. For Holmes, such a young person, such massive scale and $ figure deceit. I can't even wrap my head around it.

The fact that up until 2-3 years ago she was the darling of the media and was the head of a billion-dollar operation also irks me, especially when the current articles charge her with 'only' millions in fraud. Feels like it downplays her crimes.

Anyone it says each fraud count could be up to 20 years in prison, so I'm hoping she pays dearly. Not only were people's lives in danger, she flat out lied to the public and investors.

This is one interesting story!!

The Elizabeth Holmes saga is an indisputable facet of white privilege , so here’s a woman with no medical background , no peer reviewed study ( if you know anything about science then You’d know why peer reviews are so critical ), no verifiable history of past accclaimed and sustained work within her ’field’ and yet .........

Somehow , the venture capitalists , techies and the other cohort of self-satisfied , smug , smarter-than-thou crowd thought nothing of pouring obscene amount of money into the venture of this blonde-haired-blue-eyed Stanford drop out . What are the chances that a non white person would have pulled this off ?

-A white woman who won’t shed a freakin tear for those who got defrauded .

She also charmed a lot of 70 and 80 years olds who sat on her board and gave the operation a successful sheen, e.g. George Schultz.. (Never mind that most of them were ex military and ex government -- not medical or tech experts)

From fortune in 2015: Board includes Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of Defense Bill Perry, former Secretary of State George Shultz, former Senators Sam Nunn and Bill Frist (who, it should be noted, is a surgeon), former Navy Admiral Gary Roughead, former Marine Corps General James Mattis, and former CEOs Dick Kovacevich of Wells Fargo and Riley Bechtel of Bechtel.

Her dad was at USAID and had access to those old fogies. But a legit tech startup should have had more people from the biotech world on its board. Quite the failure of corporate governance.

Can’t wait for the movie. Jennifer Lawrence is set to star in this with Adam McKay (The Big Short) directing. It’s based on the book “Bad Blood” that came out last month.

Her actions will be blamed somehow on the “patriarchy”.

she’s hot, I’d hit it

I wanted her to succeed; she did seem exciting. Now that we know the deal, I feel a little bitter that she was given all this-- just like sheryl sandberg--and used it for shady purposes. Not that I approve of SS so much either!

I can't believe so many people fell for the fraud. I was very skeptical when I first read about her company. Who would believe a teenager who dropped out in her second year of college could produce a miracle device like that? She had no credentials or expertise. Even here on DCUM, people were openly skeptical that the science was there. (Search back and you'll find it.) But I guess young and pretty trumps common sense here. All those old men backed her up because they thought she was hot. That is all.

By whom? This feminist holds her accountable for her actions. If anything, I could see blame placed on mental illness. You have to be a little crazy to pull off such a scheme.
