If there's a heart beating within your body, in addition to your own beating heart, it's not just YOUR body.

Yes, it is. Legally, ethically, and morally.

Legally, yes. Ethically and morally would depend on the ethics and morals of the person who is pregnant with the baby and its beating heart.

Like the oxygen masks on airplanes, a pregnant woman's first and greatest responsibility is to herself. After that, it is up to her how much care she wishes to give the other beating heart.

Yes, but I'm sure you've heard the rest of the flight attendant's message...first put mask on your own face so that you can then breathe and help those who are dependent on you. That's where a mother's ethics and morals come into the picture.

And many women weigh the ethics and morals of caring for their already existing children and decide that outweighs growing another child.

And many women weigh the ethics and morals of caring for their already existing children and take steps--as much as is humanly possible--to not get pregnant again.

And yet, being human, pregnancy still happens.

Yes, and I know a wonderful young couple who couldn't have children of their own. They've just adopted the most precious little girl who is now loved and adored, and she gives them such joy! They are only appreciative and supportive of the college girl who decided to not have an abortion.

I could never give up a baby for adoption. I'd much rather abort a 4 week old embryo than that. Remember that this is a personal choice.

+ a million. I would never in a million years carry to term and give the baby up for adoption. My mind reels just thinking about.

But I've had an abortion and no regrets about it whatsoever.

Exactly. And in some cases, the woman's morals and ethics indicate that she should have the abortion, because she's not ready to create a being that will be so dependant on her.

Not trying to be unkind here, but the "being" is already created. I'm not saying it's an easy decision; I know it's very, very hard. That's why I wish more women would think ahead and use birth control.

Agree. Plus, I think lots of those who get abortions, don't really want to. They get talked into it.

LMAO. You're funny.

And what do you base this opinion on? Such a patronizing/paternalistic view of women, to imply they can't make decisions for themselves. In fact research has shown that the vast majority of women who get abortions do not regret their decisions.

If true, how sad. It's one thing to make the very hard decision to abort a baby. It's quite another to have no regrets at all.

Yes, it's okay to have an abortion as long as you regret it for the rest of your life. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa!

Unless you are there to raise those children, provide for them, and support policies that provide the things you aren't willing to do (parental leave, healthcare for children, reasonably priced health care, etc.) you have no right -NONE- to sit in judgment of someone else who has chosen a path you would not. There are LOADS of kids languishing in foster care. Put your money where your vicious mouths are and get involved with those kids who are here and who have no consistent source of love and little advantages.

Is a heartbeat alone life? Maybe. But, it's not a human viable of living outside the womb at 6 weeks. And, that life is second to the woman. Period. It it regrettable, yes. But, again, you folks are generally the ones who also object to free and ready access to health care b/c it offends your delicate sensitivities. You're hypocrites. You're sanctimonious. You're judgmental. You're disgusting.

No. We just believe that someone must speak up for the most vulnerable in our society -- the innocent child who is going to be killed because his/ her birth is not convenient for the supposedly rational adult.

Speak up?!?! Yeah, talk is cheap. You've outed yourself: You don't give a shit about the innocent child once it needs food and health care.

We do see there are ruthless individuals who feel ENTITLED to whatever VIOLENCE they have committed. So sad.

it's a kind of violence

Up to 75% of all conceptions never make it to term for one reason or another (much of them never even implanting in the uterus). Human reproduction is one of the least efficient modes of procreation in the animal/plant kingdom. If there is a god who sends a soul into every embryo at the moment of conception, he/she is the biggest abortionist of them all.

Bad assistance at a birth can be certainly be a kind of violence. If your help isn't kind and considerate, fire 'em. So much is at stake.

what? no. that's not what I meant. forcing a woman to subject her body to the physical pain, risk, and suffering of pregnancy and childbirth is a kind of violence. even if she gives birth surrounded by magical dolphins.

Exactly. Can someone clarify, if God is so cavalier about the life of embryos and fetuses, why do we have to hold them up as holding more moral weight than the women whose bodies are their host?

If you're curious about different faith systems, perhaps ask on the "religion" forum, no?

well you're making your faith the basis of fundamental political decisions that gravely effect me. so let's stay in politics.
