Country Club Questions

We belong to one as well, PP. I didn't think I'd like it but I do. We play golf and I like how easy it is to play at a CC over a public course. It's also much nicer. I also find the lessons, pro shop, etc. are no more expensive than anywhere else but easier to arrange. The one we belong to is not upscale (I'm sure people here would bash it for being low rent) but we're very happy there.

IMO: In comparison to the other city clubs mentioned, University Club not at all exclusive

People join clubs to get away from the people described in the previous 24 pages. Whew! Nice to get away from the relentless crowding and reverse snobs and have some time with our friends.

Question - do country clubs allow you to pay the $80-$100K initiation fee over a time period of is it normally due in one lump sum? We make a good income but I don't think we would be able to pay all at once and am embarrassed to ask.

My neighborhood Country Club/Golf Club has everything you need to know on it's website including taxes. Find the one you like online and it should answer all your questions.

They are all different. Really, you have to just ask. Or get the person who will be your sponsor to ask. I've sponsored people for membership in ours, but not in a long time, so I'd have to call and ask. No big deal.

It depends on the club. I'm sure any finance person would point out that if you can't pay for it all at once, you can't really afford it.

Also, most clubs require your sponsor to agree to cover you financially in case you don't meet your obligations. Be sure that you have a sponsor who would be comfortable with that, especially if you can't pay your initiation fees.

I'm trying to decide between fairfax and westwood.

PP: I am a member at Fairfax and I really like it. I am really into golf while the wife loves the pool. I think they have a deal right now where you can try the club for a year without having to commit to the initiation fee ect, at the end of the year you can either pay the initiation fee / stock purchase or opt to not join. I know that Westwood recently went through a significant overhaul on their golf course. I haven't been out there yet since they redid it but I'm sure it is nice. I think the costs are similar at each club with Westwood maybe being slightly more. Last I heard, Westwood was around 65k all in while Fairfax is around 50k.

Hope that helps.

Unlimited golf, swimming pool, and to be surrounded by "good" families.

Yeah, but at Congo you can't get a decent start time. Too many people. Not worth it anymore.

Chantilly Country Club - under renovation....it's such a great deal to pass. Fits the needs of most families. Can't beat that.

Some families living as far as Arlington, Ashburn, and Lorton even joined the club ...just because it is such a great deal. Plus you have access to at least 200 private country clubs in the country! Cart fee only ..such Firestone Country Club...etc...and if you get out of the area, like go to NYC for example, you can have full course meal for free every month in one of the exclusive business club. Olympic Size pool being finished and renovated. Building a nice outdoor patio overlooking the great view of the course....just chilling, drinking wine and relaxing....great way to just get away from home and change of pace every week. Check it out. The renovation will have a good change to the club and the people coming in...get in there before all renovation is over...then cost may change, too. THE BEST thing is not one member needs to pay an assessment fee AT ALL even with all the multil million renovation. Why? Book a tour and see for yourself. You will see why golf members and social are flocking in very quickly....because they see the VALUE in what they are paying for. PEOPLE are nice and not stuck up.

Country Club of Fairfax - nice but you have TO PAY. Atleast 25000-30000 downpayment....and if golfer, you would pay at least 800 per month...that's including all extra fees...plus of course, extra on food and other stuff. You have to play often to feel you are getting the value of what you just put in. Chantilly National is getting more attractive to many because of the VALUE...you get more than what you pay for! You feel more relaxed that way. Westwood - very nice of course, just pay 75000 downpayment to be a member of golf. Money you would just give away- you won't see anymore. Does it really need to be that expensive just to feel PART OF a club? Is it worth it? Yes, to someone playing daily or at least 5x a week...if 1-2 x only- not worth it at all.

Well, in your opinion. In someone else's opinion -- the thousands of people who belong to clubs, it is worth it.
