Yes, and it's just a coincidnce that Dufief is the least wealthy and most demographically diverse of all the Wootton cluster schools. Of course they gotta go. |
They should come up with a new option then that is a hybrid of one of those options and option H. Option H should not be just about moving the existing Wootton school to Crown. That is not going to fill up crown or alleviate overcrowding at other schools. They should look at all feeders to Wootton, QO, Gaithersburg, North West and shuffle them all around and then finally put the new Wootton at Crown. |
They never should have been zoned to Wootton to begin with. Same goes with parts of Travilah. Nothing to do with wealth, just proximity. Travilah also should go to QO. Kids further away in Muddy Branch and West Diamond Avenue are bussed to QO while Dufief and Travilah which are nearby are bussed much further away to Wootton instead of QO. |
Did you listen in on the board meeting yesterday? There isn't going to be another round of options. They may potentially tweak an existing option but that's it. Taylor makes the recommendation in February, they solicit community feedback and the final vote is late March. To go from A-H to what you are talking about to be Taylor's final recommendation would be a very big deal. It would eliminate any shred of trust and transparency throughout this process. I'm not saying it couldn't happen but it would be a very big deal if it did. Lots of warriors on this board who want to move Dufief and Travillah to QO to stick it to the Wootton parents, based on about a mile or so difference. Look at a boundary map, it's not like all zoning is determined by equal distance around each school. There are plenty of detrimental impacts to communities and kids uprooting longstanding feeder patterns but again, you don't care about that. You just want that schadenfreude. |
QO didn't exist when it started to go to Wootton 50 years ago. Tell me where it should have gone instead. |
Based on another post and I think the school built years match it, Dufief was always assigned to Wootton. Even before QO was built. There are of course going to be issues in reassigning a school, especially if a community views one school being better than another. What shouldn't have happened was all of new homes built in the North Potomac area after QO was built being assigned to any school other than QO. The same goes with the Potomac Glen area somehow having the 20854 zip code and being zoned for Churchill. |
You know what? If they sent Dufief, Stone Mill and Travillah ALL to Crown, I'd understand that. But to only eliminate Dufief from Wootton because they have less money, more immigrants and the county thought they wouldn't stand up for themselves feels super wrong. |
Fallsmead is too big to move to RM and will make RM overcrowded. Cold spring is possible but that’s still not enough to accommodate 300 kids from fields road to Wootton. Dufief is small which means that it’s more flexible to move them anywhere. |
That did not stop MCPS from moving the Clarksburg and Damascus kids to Seneca Valley. So why should they stop now? I do not believe anything Taylor says, so who knows, he may come up with something new again. |
Okay I am sorry I didn't know that. I do not know but maybe someone can educate me - how may times did this area face rezoning in the 50 years? |
Yes. Small, less wealth, more immigrants, a history of the county making promises to the school and breaking them. That must equal flexible. |
They faced rezoning when QO opened int he late 80s/early 90s and the county promised them back then they would remain with Wootton. |
I agree. These new 4 year old homes down QO Rd (I think it is called Mt. Prospect) should have been assigned to QO. They did not have any long standing community to argue about. At least now they should be reassigned. |
When the initial options involving Dufief were given you should have filled those surveys and voiced your concerns and asked for Travilah to be moved instead citing that that community is new. Both are closer to QO than Wootton. |
Well Dufief doesn’t beat fields road for diversity so guess what MCPS would do. |
