Who is the former heroin addict?

The director, Sean Baker. He recovered from his heroin addiction and then proceeded to make film after film about sex workers. In Anora, he cast Mikey Madison, then in her early 20s, to strip and perform graphic sex scenes and gyrations nude without an intimacy coordinator. For this they are both rewarded by the entertainment industry.

Maybe it's his redemption but what a message that sends to young actresses. Meanwhile better performances were overlooked.

Ugh I am more and more irritated by this as I think of these things. I was listening to an Oscars podcast the other day where they were discussing how much younger and more international the Academy is now and how things are different blah, blah, blah. Well some things may be different and others are depressingly the same as they ever were.

If so, kind of funny!

Yes, he threw it to his wife. 😂

Oh that’s not his wife that’s his girlfriend. You know whose wife she was though? Harvey Weinstein.

Yikes. Another strike against Adrian Brody.

She left him in 2017 when all of the accusations started. The divorce wasn’t finalized until 2021, but she didn’t stand by him and isn’t responsible for his crimes.

Do you really believe that she had absolutely no idea what her husband was up to?

She designs gowns (the line us or was called Marchesa) and Weinstein used to pressure actresses to wear her gowns to events and they did! Maybe she woke up and changed but who knows. Marrying Weinstein had to be for money and influence. He was a thoroughly despicable person.

She found Harvey and wanted in on the casting couch as another wannabe actress. Supposedly he found her so completely devoid of charm or talent (the bar has never been that high!) he nixed the idea of her acting but set her up with a vanity label as a "designer" and then basically bullied all of the other actresses he was bedding into wearing Marchesa- it's why ever actress in the early aughts looked dressed up like a sugar plum fairy. Everyone knew about Harvey. Maybe less about the forceable rape, but he was a notorious abuser and sex addict where the price for admission into his films was sex, this could not have been a surprise to her. She's always been supremely suspect and so is Brody so I guess that makes sense.

Can I also say that every year I am SO UPSET that they botch the In Memoriam. It's the easiest thing to do and any one of us could probably put together a great montage with clips and beautiful background music. But they make us watch the whole damn thing through a tiny keyhold in the middle of the screen. Plus they should have given 2/3 of that Bond time over to the In Memoriam -- there were some really important people lost this year and they got like a second of air time. I am glad they brought Morgan Cooper out to talk about Gene Hackman. I now want to go watch Unforgiven since I love them both.

YES. I thought it was going to be good since there wasn’t a famous singer, but then they couldn’t just put the screen keyhole on the damn screen.

This happened to me as well, it was so annoying!

Right? So “brave”.

And if i hear “I share this with the sex worker community” one more time I’m going to vomit. Like, sure, I’m sure the sex worker community is getting a boost from your stupid award.

What nonsense.

Thanking sex workers in the acceptance speech made me cringe. Women shouldn't be in situations where the only occupation they can succeed at is one that exploits them.

Right. Just get out and get a real job. retail restaurants whatever. Help yourself. They don't deserve our thanks or admiration.

What does the recovery from heroin addiction have to do with anything?

DP

Maybe poor judgment ?

Glorifying industry that involves hooking young women on addictive substances to keep them pulling tricks?

Normalizing misogyny?

I love Demi’s hair. It’s shiny and fits her face.

Oof. It makes her waist look larger and draws attention to her old looking arms. Hard pass.

I knew I didn't like this, but it took me a while to figure out why.

Her boobs are RIDICULOUS. I'd want her in something that de-emphasizes them. And yes, cover or give her the option to cover her arms.

Her hair is too long -- not so much because of her age, but because it's getting straggly. Cut a few inches off. Dress in a color.

She looked much nicer at the Golden Globes.

I am 60. Agree with much of what you said. But disagree on the arms. That is why older women look so matronly at these events -- they are worried about their arms and cover them. Her arms a great and I think she looks good. Not like she is 20 but good. If you think she needs to cover her arms, got help us and help you when you turn 60! We need to set different standards.

Agree with you. There is nothing wrong with her arms. I am more worried about her face. She is starting to not look like herself. I hate it when they do the things that start to make them look alien. It's so off-putting. I do not like that people are starting to find those faces to be "normal" on older women and praise them. Let people age naturally FFS.

She's beautiful, but her fight against aging is sad and ironic considering the topic of the movie for which she was nominated. In interviews she talks about accepting yourself yet she doesn't seem to be accepting her reality. It's one thing to be as healthy as you can but another to make yourself look unnatural.

On another note, I think it's time for a new haircut/style.

Well, it’s why Demi was a genius pick for that film. I feel bad for her, really—she clearly has been through a lot and never had good self esteem. I think she’s finally getting to a place where she can be comfortable with herself but it’s clearly a work in progress. I wish she still had Bruce as a support, and I hope her daughters are kind with her.
And I agree she needs a hair cut. She looked phenomenal years ago with a blunt cut shoulder length or slightly shorter cut.

I feel worse for people like you, who missed that the point of the film is about YOU challenging and reflecting on YOUR perspective, as it is societal pressure that drives women to feel like they have to try to stay young and thing by any means possible. Leave her alone, she's beautiful. She obviously likes her hair that way. GOOD FOR HER.

It had to be all about exposure of her brand. She was a judge on Project Runway (a Weinstein production) for many seasons, and she worked in mentions of Marchesa as much as possible.

NP- Demi Moore said it was about bad self-image and self-esteem, not public perception. If you look at Katy Bates, Jodi Foster, nobody is saying they look bad at all. But we all notice bad plastic surgery because it looks like bad self-esteem.

Wait, so saying that she would look better if her hair was six inches shorter makes me part of the patriarchy? That seems like an extreme take. She obviously should keep her hair that way if she likes it -- we all do things that we like even though they aren't the most flattering choice for us, because being comfortable in your skin is more important than the most flattering look. (Like I could look better with more makeup but I choose not to wear it because I don't like it.) But if she's wearing the hair super long because she thinks that's most flattering, or compelled by societal norms, I think she's making a mistake. Same for Ivanka and some other women. I think a lot of women wear their hair too long because they feel like that's what men want.

Never say never but i wont lie she's in a tough spot. She's not like a Meryl Streep who has the opponent to be given a lot of scripts. She's also not a big enough celebrity she can coast by with her name only her age can. Hopefully she takes this opportunity and get as much engagement as she can to keep herself out there.
