Navy Elementary - Principal Resignation

1) if you don’t want to open the doors at 8:20, why not have the interim principal (or another admin) stand outside with the kids, starting at 8:20, and just let the kids wait outside the door. Keep the line moving. The problem is now that people are getting into line super early and just waiting in their cars, and is having a massive knock on effect. By 8:20, the line is already backed up onto Thompson. By 8:25, the line is backed up down halfway down Thompson and Lamplight. Keep. The Line. Moving. If you’re a kinder parent and your child needs help getting out of the car, why not continue to the parking lot to unload your cargo? OR what if kinder parents got a special piece of paper that they could put in their dashboard alerting the kids and ride staff that “hey, this kid might need help getting out of the car. Can you help them get out please?” A 5 year old in a car seat can’t tuck and roll as efficiently as a 6th grader.

2) Right turns only upon exit OR, as previously suggested, have someone directing traffic at these key points. It’s not really a big deal to make a left of Thompson, but West Ox. This is actually a really dangerous spot. You have people making U-turns, people making right turns, and people making left turns across 4 lanes of traffic. All in the same spot. It’s just an accident waiting to happen.

3) crack down on the people cutting the line and making illegal left turns into kiss and ride. We all have things to do. We’ve all been waiting 15+ minutes. You are not special. I am making a mental note of who your child is so when my kid asks if they can have a playdate, I can say “no Larlo. Their parents are inconsiderate, entitled a-holes”.

When you say right turns only at exit, I hope you mean just onto West Ox. I personally take a left onto Thompson Rd when I exit the parking lot. It is very easy to take a left there and a lot of the time Thompson is actually backed up because of people turning left on West Ox. I do not agree with forcing peopel who exit the Navy parking lot to take a right on Thompson as that will back up things further.

The best thing to do would be to make the kids get out further away, at the top of this hill, when they are in the kiss n ride line. Too many wait until they are closer to the doors to let their kids out. We could be letting out 12-13 cars instead of 5-6. Post a staff member at the end of the straightaway and you will see better results.

Also, for those who pick up in the afternoon, have you noticed a few kids will actually go all the way up to Thompson Rd. to stand and wait so their parent doesn’t have to enter the parking lot? Then that parent blocks the whole line and zooms away, avoiding the parking lot. This is totally unacceptable.

DP but I want to know this too. This is the only school where people consistently post about the kiss and ride line. The one at my school runs really smoothly and is always short, probably because most families put their kids on the bus. I've only used kiss and ride on days when I happened to be leaving the house at the same time as the kids and offered to drop them off. For pick up, our school has numbers and they call the numbers with a walkie talkie when you're at the end of the line so your kid is waiting for you..

Not a Navy parent, but I am pretty sure I'd put my kid on the bus. I will say that Navy's location probably adds to the problem. But, ride the bus, and problem is solved.

Navy has a weird layout from years of adhoc expansions. As such the access point is on a narrow road and the exit point leads into a major road with 4 lanes but no police direction which can backup into the kiss and ride.

The backup is often more than half a mile due in part to multiple merges as the line snakes around 3 corners on one side and a t intersection on the other. I tried to post a picture of the Google maps for Navy's line but it seems free picture hosting sites are blocked on this website.

As for why more kids don't take the bus. My kids bus is entirely inconsistent, it shows up and departs 10 min early or 20 min late. You have to constantly watch here comes the bus to anticipate it. If it's late, as it often is, you're better off trying to get your kid to school.

Don’t bother explaining why you do kiss n ride. It’s just the same ignorant poster over and over trying to sir the pot. Perhaps that poster doesn’t even have kids bc they don’t seem to understand why the blanket statement “just have your kid ride the bus” isn’t the answer. The solution isn’t everyone rides the bus, it’s to actually fix the kiss n ride.

Please just have the kids get out of the car earlier in the kiss n ride line.

Nope the kiss and ride line is a problem because so many people use it.
Anonymous
For years, our elementary school (mostly walkers) had parents playing safety patrol at the entrance and exit to the parking lot with kiss and ride. (walkers had to cross the entrance and exit.) One day, a parent looked at it and said why not put a sidewalk around the parking lot. Took the idea to the principal and it happened very quickly. Problem solved. Longer --but safer --walk for the kids.

Stupid question: Has anyone asked a professional to study this? It sounds awful from the description.

It's a good thing they are doing this boundary study then. Hopefully they rezone some of those kids out of your school so you have a better community.

lol. Not the only school. We are at an AAP center school and K&R is a nightmare.

And just wait until middle school or high school.

This question just reveals a lack of experience or knowledge
