Madison won 90% of the faceoffs but their offense looked pretty weak. Not much movement or passing and just couldn’t capitalize on the possession advantage. Riverside moved the ball better and defense looked pretty solid. Obviously a pretty even game otherwise. Riverside scored with 20 seconds left in regulation to send it to overtime and then got the job done.

Madison won 98% of face-offs.

And not get the W is brutal. Is Riverside just that good in other facets of the game?

Obviously they are….
If their D1 commit Fogo plays and goes his normal 70 or even 50%, it’s not that close.
The good news is 3/22 Riverside vs Atlee should settle the VHSL lacrosse debate.

It’s the first game of the season, but neither team looked that good. I don’t think either will be as dominant as they have been in past years. It would be fun if Atlee beat Riverside and Madison beat Atlee.

Agreed. Madison looked a little hesitant and was a bit sloppy on passes and catches. It's D, led by their star LSM, caused plenty of turnovers that they couldn't convert on. The player who most caught my eye was Madison FOGO--winning 19 of 20 draws is impressive, no matter who the competition is. Riverside played a little crisper, just enough to win. All in all, an exciting game to open the season, and I'm certain both squads with get better over the course of the season.

It sounds like Riverside did as well, which significantly impacted them on face-offs. If previous posts are true, a team winning 90 or 98% of face-offs should not lose games. If they do, either that team is severely deficient in other areas or the other team is just that much better in other areas of the game. How many turnovers did Madison have? How many saves did the Riverside goalie have? I don’t know what player Madison was missing or what position, but it would be hard to imagine missing that player would have had a bigger impact than Riverside missing a top face-off player., especially when it’s reported they lost 19 of 20. This should be a big concern for both Madison and Riverside for different reasons.

Sloppy game for the offenses. Passing and catching were not where they need to be for either team to compete for championships. Riverside offense was more patient and had better off ball play. Madison isolation plays were not enough, consistently to get good looks. Seems like they are searching for an identity.

Both defenses looked solid. LSM for Madison was the best player on the field. Double digit caused turnovers. Riverside defense wasn't winning one on one matchups but played well as a unit in front of a solid keeper.

Riverside Keeper made the big saves at the right moment. Madison had a good look at the end of the game to win it in regulation but Riverside keeper made an impressive save. Both teams were resilient, battling back from a few goals down at different times in the game. Madison tried to run the clock starting at about 7 min left in the 4th which was not a great strategy in the end. Madison had the first OT possession but sloppy passing/catching bit them again. Riverside ran a patient offensive set for the game winner with an alley cut and low angle shot.

Fun game to watch.

Not a fan of either team, but seen enough lacrosse. I would agree with most all of this here. Having broken down Riverside before, this is the way they play. Patient and methodical, off ball movement to wear you down. I would disagree on the 1v1 matchups, as they don’t really do that to score, but to just run you to get you tired on D and to cycle the offense, not to beat you on a matchup. Most Madison shots were off 1v1 and outside at 15+ yards, some at 20. While VERY impressed at the number they hit, they had almost nothing inside. 20 yard shots are lower probability targets and easier to make the save. Personally not a long term strategy I like.

I agree with all of this. I had it at 18/19, although it seemed he won the clamp and rake on the 19th and it should have been 19/19. Madison’s best attack seemed content to stand 15 yards out up top and just launch shots. That’s not going to cut it against Robinson or Yorktown either.

1v1 matchups was in reference to the Riverside D not the O. They did not have any defenders winning any of the 1v1 matchups....just solid compact team D with short slides when the Madison Offense won the 1v1 matchup . Could be attributed to the poor Madison ball movement. Defense wasn't being forced to rotate or move off ball so the slides were always waiting and short.

You are correct that the Riverside O doesn't use 1v1 to score however early in the game individual breakdowns on 1v1 Madison D and poor slides was the primary way Riverside did score. Seemed like Madison cleaned that up as the game progressed. No individual player on the Riverside O stood out but again they played a nice patient offensive game and waited for good shooting opportunities. Good win by a well coached Riverside team.

Love all the post game analysis. Winner of the Robinson Yorktown game is probably the new number one next week.
