NP here. There is mno such thing as a "public ivy", and if you use that phrase, it makes you seem uneducated/ignorant/uninformed. |
So why one size fits all? Assuming you're an educated consumer (correct me if that's a leap of faith), why not decide what's important for you instead of USNWR telling YOU what's important? |
None of the Top 25 privates fell out the T25. Unlike West coasts USC. |
? according to whom? I keep hearing that SAT scores are really meaningless and that's why so many colleges are going TO, so what does it matter that one college has higher SAT scores than the other? It's self selecting. BTW, my kid had a 1580 on their SATs. The acceptance rate is based on the number of people applying there, correct? If more people apply to UVA only because more kids in VA go to college compared to MI, then the acceptance rate doesn't really matter much. |
It’s baffling that UVA is only three spots lower than Michigan considering that overall academically they aren’t quite peers. As for the acceptance rates, SAT scores, and safety remarks; you couldn’t be more clueless. UVA is finally where it belongs as the #5 public school. I could easily see it dropping to #6 next year. |
| UVA is the best school in the South bar-none. UNC unexpected jump is a fluke that will be corrected next year. Vanderbilt and WashU are trending down as both fell by 5+ spots this year. Rice is too small to have the widespread impact of UVA. Duke no longer has Coach K and basketball is the only reason people care about it. UVA has the best academics, an extremely loyal alumni base, and a commitment to service as a public university. |
Rice has a peer reputation score of 4.2 lower than Vandys 4.3, and the sane as Emory at 4 2. Get a freaking grip. |
|
UVA is certainly at a lower level than Ivy League schools, especially in STEM majors.
But I am glad my kid enjoys 20K in-state tuition (after a 20K scholarship) at a top 25 school, which is equivalent to CMU, Emory or WUSTL all with a price tag of 80K.

Dp, There was a best selling book about the public Ivies, a phrase coined by the author. I think you are the one who is uninformed. |
True, just that some DCUMers like to parse the rankings to the nth degree |
Rice, and Emory only dropped 2 spots. Vandy dropped 5 and wake 18. Seems like Rice and Emory have more upside and a better chance to rise in the ranking. |
Oddly joyous? Get a life, PP |
Michigan gets more applications than UVA but is much easier to get into as an instate student. |
I don’t particularly care for or agree with the term, but it is a real thing. “The term was first coined in 1985 by Yale University admissions officer Richard Moll, who published Public Ivies: A Guide to America's Best Public Undergraduate Colleges and Universities. That initial list included eight universities and nine runners-up.[1] In 2001, college guide authors Howard Greene and Matthew Greene, released their own book, The Public Ivies: The Great State Colleges and Universities,[3] which included 30 schools.[2]”. |
Actually the acceptance rates and test scores of both schools are identical with Michigan being a bit better in both metrics. Furthermore, Michigan gets many more applications than UVA. Just another testament to the fact that Michigan is more of a national school in comparison. |
