What do you want to see in S5 of The Handmaid’s Tale?

Now, I’m a big fan of June/Nick. The hotness!

Do you think Luke is supposed to show how naive June was in the beginning? He never changed, but June was changed by her experiences. He didn't have that. So, he's this soft guy (no disrespect!), who just doesn't get her anymore. Seeing him has always made me wonder how they were as a couple before Gilead.

In the book, there’s a fair bit about her backstory. Her mom was a radical feminist that marched for womens rights and June found it all exhausting so she really rejected it and lived a really quiet, apolitical life. When the book starts, she is a very passive handmaid who is sort of dead to her world. So I can see her and nick leading a very quiet, non confrontational life. I remember there were also bits in the books where she sort of resented luke because as some of her rights were stripped away, he was sort of indifferent to it. Like when women lost bank accounts, he was sort of like well, we’re married—you don’t really need a separate account. It was very much a story of how people gradually become accustomed to things until suddenly you wake up and think “holy crap—how did we get Here?”

I think Janine is going to the colonies unfortunately.

+1

All she ever did the last episode is go get the crying baby. Annoying. She has so much to contribute.

Women (and men) in Gilliad don’t get to chose their life partner, divorce, remarry, maybe have the baby split Easter’s. Remember Eden? She tried to leave Nick for Todd and they were both killed. Lawrence got a few months to mourn, and then it was “there is no place in Gilliad for those who don’t follow our lifestyle” and Naomi Putnam was pushed at him because they both needed to be in a marriage, preferably with a kid (never mind he had her husband killed; “he is willing to overlook that).

But, Rose sounds like a college co-Ed “I’ve seen how you look at my roommate. You don’t really love me so I’m leaving you”. And that works for college co-Ed’s. It does not work in a world where women become handmaids or are sent to the colonies for divorce.

AND she is carrying a commander’s child? The child of an eye? What’s her plan? Walk away from Nick with the baby, move back into daddy’s house and have a Martha help raise the kid? Get a divorce and remarry? Her father could never set that example. Serena, a top Commanders wife heads home AFTER HER HUSBAND CUTS OF HER FINGER and whips her (and technically she has no baby at that point) and her mother is like: nope. Going back to Fred is your only option.

Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised Rose was so protected she thinks this is a special plan applying only to her. Or, maybe she will join the Vancouver bound train. But, Nick knows better. Up close and personal from Eden. I’m very surprised he doesn’t sit her down and give her a dose of cold, hard, you are going to get yourself killed reality.

When she said she didn't want to be with him anymore and was leaving, he said, "You can't." I think he meant it literally.

She wouldn't be allowed to function outside of the rules. Even if her father is THE Commander, there is no place for a divorcee or widow in Gilead, as we've seen.

Nick said, "You can't," trying to remind her of this.

So done with the Serena and June storyline.

I just watched the episode. I love the June/Serena storyline.

I think Lawrence has gone to the dark side, for real. There were two women whom he respected and tried to be good for-- Eleanor and June. They both ultimately judged and rejected him. Now he will do what men who've been rejected do-- give in to his sense of entitlement and resentment and destroy everything good.

Nick is being detained, and it's unclear how much danger he's in or how much he's damaged his position. If Lawrence has truly gone to the dark side, he may find Nick's challenge unforgivable.

If so, I predict Nick will be busted out of detention by his connections in the Eyes and will then head to Chicago to join the resistance.

Or it was a ploy to get Nick arrested and “disappear” to be with June.

Either June, Luke, or Nick has to die. That's the only one "easy" resolution to this messy triangle. My money is on St. June. It would serve as a Christ allegory in the storyline.

Nick's allegiance to any cause is questionable at best. The resistance should reject him.

I know I'm reviving an old post but I just can't get over how they ended it on the train. "Do you have a diaper?" I wanted to strangle her. How did this become a buddy show? Moira was essentially written out. All of the Canadian handmaids disappeared. Why was June left linked to Serena?

For what it's worth, Nick was a huge disappointment as well. He has been so consistently disciplined. How could he have gone off like that, so publicly?! It was utterly inconsistent with his character.

I'm looking for some serious clean up next season.

The close-ups are so ridiculous and totally overdone.
