Do you think Luke is supposed to show how naive June was in the beginning? He never changed, but June was changed by her experiences. He didn't have that. So, he's this soft guy (no disrespect!), who just doesn't get her anymore. Seeing him has always made me wonder how they were as a couple before Gilead.

In the book, there’s a fair bit about her backstory.  Her mom was a radical feminist that marched for womens rights and June found it all exhausting so she really rejected it and lived a really quiet, apolitical life.  When the book starts, she is a very passive handmaid who is sort of dead to her world.  So I can see her and nick leading a very quiet, non confrontational life.  I remember there were also bits in the books where she sort of resented luke because as some of her rights were stripped away, he was sort of indifferent to it.  Like when women lost bank accounts, he was sort of like well, we’re married—you don’t really need a separate account.  It was very much a story of how people gradually become accustomed to things until suddenly you wake up and think “holy crap—how did we get Here?”[/quote]
