The school board wants to rezone every 5 years to achieve One Fairfax in the schools. (Their words, not mine)

Grandfathering hinders this goal.

WHAT IS ONE FAIRFAX?????

I don't understand.

Is it some sort of educational theory? Help me.

I wonder if they'll be dumb enough to cite it when they propose changes. "One Fairfax is a joint racial and social equity policy of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and School Board. The 2016 One Fairfax Resolution commits the county and schools to intentionally consider equity when making policies or delivering programs and services." Sounds like good grounds for a lawsuit opposing any changes.

Some people here seem to think FCPS would be in hot water legally if they mention equity or diversity as goals. They can't specifically rezone based on race without violating the law, but they can rezone to try and achieve economic diversity. They avoid such discussions because they think it would be politically unpopular, not illegal, and because they think they can do just about anything they want and claim it's based on "efficiency" considerations (which is a farce, but they'll keep saying it).

By way of comparison, however, MCPS is about to undertake its own county-wide boundary study, and they've been much more upfront about how "diversity" is a goal of theirs ("We want to create schools with a diverse study body"). https://mocoshow.com/2024/12/16/mcps-introduces-2024-2025-boundary-study/

FCPS leadership and School Board isn't very different than MCPS leadership and Board of Education these days, just less honest and forthcoming about their motivations.

The threat of lawsuit is real and I’m sure they’ve been coached by counsel to not touch diversity with a ten foot pole.

They are so up each other’s rears in their echo chamber that they might even think that those efforts would be largely supported. They’re wrong, of course, but that’s the only way these clowns know how to be.

PS, if they are focused on economic diversity why do they have all those hand picked special interest groups on the boundary review advisory committee?

That's true, but if they continue to invoke one fairfax, they open the door because one fairfax specifically invokes race

Anyone see anything particularly interesting?

BOTH of the picks from WSHS are from Hunt Valley

Haha. I bet they are.

As a HVES parent I would like to personally thank the fake news article that lit a fire within our community.

Hopefully, some other WSHS parents will catch on and stop the process. It can’t possibly be fair when 2 people from the same school will push the rest of us out.

I don't know - I would hope they'd advocate for no one to have to leave WSHS.

Nope. Those HVES moms will push to save themselves, but push out WSES.

But neither of those moves makes sense when they could take the Keene Mill attendance island and give the whole thing to White Oaks/Lake Braddock. Some of the island already goes KM-LBSS anyway! It’s a much less disruptive move even if there is some cascading on LB’s other elementary schools. (And I’m not firmly convinced anyone needs to be moved out of WSHS - I don’t have kids there or in the WS pyramid, but my friends who do say the school doesn’t feel overcrowded due to the renovations.)

They are not overcrowded.

The 200 kids over capacity basically means around 1 extra kid per classroom. The halls are spacious and not packed. There are no weird lunch shifts. The school has no trailers.

The 8th grade Irving class is smaller than the class of 2025 they are replacing.

The 7th grade Irving class is MUCH smaller than the class of 2026 they are replacing by over 100 students smaller.

WSHS is fine without rezoning.

100% - I have one kid at WSHS and one at Irving. Our neighborhood is highly unlikely to be rezoned anywhere and I agree with this. The school is not overcrowded and I'm very skeptical of the numbers that say it will be in 5 years. Feels like they are making it up to justify propping up Lewis with kids from surrounding schools.

Yes.

On the October 8, 2024 dsytime planning meeting, Dr. Reid and that school board explicitly stated that all rezoning would be designed to achieve One Fairfax.

Also, in the BRAC committee community groups, the school board appointed advocates for every major racial demographic in Fairfax County, except for white students. Fairfax county no longer has a majority race demographic, with whites falling to a plurality of the mid 40 percentile. There are special interest advocates for hispanics, asians, African American and lbgtq+ students appointed by the school board.

The irony to the "diversity rezoning" idea is that actually, in the case of WSHS and Lewis, WSHS is more diverse. WSHS families are NOT afraid of diversity - in fact, FCPS should be holding up WSHS as a fantastic example of a school that has a diverse student population and is succeeding instead of trying to tear it down.

Then why is the software that FCPS is using to create rezoning options specifically designed to break down student racial demographics down to the household level?

This was requested by Reid and the school board from Thru at the October 8th planning meeting.

Did I misunderstand what Reid was requesting?

Because is sounded very clear to me.

YES!!

ACPS explicitly states the reason they only have one high school is to avoid re-segregation if they were to build a second school. Such a statement is obviously not cause for a lawsuit, and FCPS would not be in any hot water either.
