Crazy Commute - is it worth it to go to school of choice????

If DC gets into our top pick for him, we'll have 2 kids at different schools with round-trip (home-school-work-school-home) totaling 20 miles! In DC/MD rush hour traffic! Has anyone else faced a bear of a commute and enrolled their child despite the commuting inconvenience? If so, did it work out for you? We're a little attached to our house right now, so not liking the idea of moving. Maybe that priority will shift with oppressive logistics.....

Many, many families do it. We do it to three separate schools. It's fine.

Not OP, but in a carpool scenario, is anyone ever willing to do a one-driver carpool?
Meaning, say you're a SAHP in MD or VA who has always driven your child into DC everyday. I WOH full-time. If I paid you for gas, would you be willing to drive my child with you on a daily basis?

I have this issue and it gets to be a problem because DC's friends all live far away and the drive for evening school events, with rush hour, is terrible. We are going to transfer schools and this is one reason.

I would just move to MD or VA with good public schools.

I did it for 4 long years. To and from school are not too bad but activities, sports and events are a nightmare. Your kid needs to plan for some long days because there's no going home and then back for an evening event or game. A couple of friends that live close to school are essential. I WOH full time. It was hard with only 1. I don't know if I could have done it with 2.

I have two kids at 2 schools this year - 1 is a longish commute and one is close to him. We are finding it very challenging dealing with the logistics of two schools. It's not just the school days, it's also 2x the back-to-school nights, weekend events, activities, etc. Very hard.

We both have jobs with lots of flexibility and I am very organized but I'm still finding it hard. Daily quality of life is worth a lot.

This. I do not want to be tied down to your kid for gas money. If I needed it I would but it is not enough to make it worth it. If you were a long time friend who helped me, maybe. Hire a driver. I stay home to attend to my kids, not yours.

Would not do it. Makes life miserable especially on bad weather days or a day with a major traffic issue.

Personally, if it is your top pick I would try it at least for a year. 20 miles round trip to all those things is not that bad. I know kids in my DD's school that live 45min away.

If it is too much of a hassle, then try something else but why bother applying and hoping for this top school if you won't give it a shot?

Have to agree after doing it for a couple years.

As far as carpool, it may nor may work out and most times its the not work out that happens.
