Yes, I'd prefer larger classes to anti-vax teachers.

NP but it won’t lead to larger classes it will lead to a substitute teacher. If there are subs who are vaccinated . . .

DP it will definitely lead to students in classrooms on tech doing some sort of “lesson” through canvas while being watched by whatever 21+ year old person the school can find. I am a teacher who 100% supports the mandate, but also thinks it’s fair to be transparent on what will happen personnel -wise

I appreciate you saying this. I would hope that teachers who refuse to be vaccinated under a mandate see that they wouldn’t have much support. The narrative last year was that teachers needed the vaccine in order to teach in person. They early access to the vaccine, before other people who had been actually already working in person. It seems sort of the height of hypocrisy for teachers to now say they shouldn’t have to get the vax.

+1 They fought for it and now they can get it or go.

Ok. Where are the replacements going to come from? Make sure you are thinking this through. Districts are begging for teachers these days. And they couldn’t staff the monitor positions even when they wanted to last year. Are you going to step up?

There is a limit to how big classes are allowed to be.

How antivax are teachers that we are going to have a significant shortage under a vax mandate? You are suggesting it’s pretty significant.

I’m a DP who has mentioned on other threads that even a small percentage relates to a significant number of dcps teachers. 94% of teachers who filled out the vaccination survey that DCPS sent out reported they were vaxxed. Even if we were overly optimistic and project that out over a ~6000 person workforce that’s 360 teachers. People can infer what they want about who did and didn’t fill out the survey but 360 people would be very hard to replace three weeks before PD

Well those people can be tested weekly or find a new job.

That’s fine by me, I was just answering the PP’s question.

Two things:
1). Not being vaxxed yet is not the same as quitting your job if you are required to be vaxxed
2) we are talking about a totally hypothetical mandate so it’s not like there’s some deadline. I’d imagine at best Bowser would do a vax or test protocol. If we move to a full mandate I’d imagine that, like other employers, they’d announce some future deadline so as to minimize disruptions in staff number.

So far employee mandates are working better than anything else to get people vaccinated. Faced with losing their job, they get the shot.

Look, the Chancellor knows that a vaccine mandate would create staff shortages across the district. With us being just a couple weeks out from school starting DCPS is not in the position to replace that many teachers. Not to mention majority Black schools will feel the impact the hardest.

WaPo or federal agencies can implement vaccine mandates because the positions are desirable and easily filled. There is not currently, nor has there ever been a line of people scrambling for a job teaching in DCPS. The district has worked for years (mostly unsuccessfully) to retain people.

If the Chancellor said numerous times this past spring that the vaccine wouldn't be required, and then he suddenly changes course, would any teacher forced to resign as a result of not being vaxxed qualify for unemployment?

No. They would be fired for cause.

You lost me. I thought the person was answering a legal question. Why is stating (what I thought was) a legal opinion being crappy to teachers?
