However this precedent doesn't automatically mean that public K-12 schools can require the vaccine, since the safety bar for vaccines is higher for children, and some parents will likely fight a lot harder for their minor kids than for their college kids.

If this were a purely medical/public health decision, vaccines would be required in group settings of all sorts (schools, prisons, nursing homes, group homes, etc). But this will be just as much a political decision as a scientific one - judges are not scientists, and if it goes to the Supreme Court as a question on civil liberties, I will remind you that this Court is very much on the side of giving individuals enough rope to hang themselves.

Ok, then what about staff/teachers?

It doesn’t matter what the courts say. You have to have a local government willing to say it is mandatory. DC gov is not that entity at this point

Are you saying that DC gov is NOT making it mandatory at present? Yes we know that. But COULD they?

It doesn’t matter if they could, they WON’T. I would not be surprised if it isn’t mandatory next school year either.

Why are you saying they WON'T (in caps)?

At what point do we all look around at the disaster that is continuing to happen and decide 'enough is enough'? You think Bowser will just say "meh more of my populace dying is fine, keeping the schools closed again is fine, education gaps by race increasing is fine"? When is it enough?

No one is keeping the schools closed this year. No one.

Is that wishful thinking again?

I'm not really a covid hysteric, but I am a person who has watched a lot of people make decisions based on poor risk analysis, and I've watched the schools be closed even when all the relevant authorities said they were safe to open (with precautions). I'm more nervous about the hysterical among us keeping things closed. I'm more worried about the political theater that will hurt all our kids' education.

DP: I have generally lost my faith in the ability of government to do good work.

I’m sure what bowser cares about. Her ambitions maybe? But people in her city dying or car jacking or not going to school is not top 10.

You know, I've never voted for a Republican before for anything, but Hogan seems to be doing better things than Bowser (not that I can vote in MD).

I have never voted for her. I write someone in.

I find it fascinating that we are so concerned about the risk of travelers when we are supposedly ok with teachers and staff not being vaccinated. I would think they pose a much higher risk to kids under 12 than whatever tiny risk might happen from travel.

As a vaccinated teacher, I would love to know that all my colleagues have been vaccinated. I don't think Bowser is interested in making vaccinations mandatory.

Bowser and public education leaders in this city failed our kids. It is shameful and disgusting but none of them care. They prioritized making sure people with excess money could eat in restaurants than educating kids. If I could leave DC, I would, because my kids have suffered immensely. I am not turning to the disgusting Republican party - they bare the blame for much of the vaccine hesitancy, the insurrection on Jan. 6, the rise of fascism and acceptance of racism, etc. The list is too long to write here. But I am also not going to give leaders in this city a pass just because they are Democrats. DC leadership - starting with Bowser - has made it clear that they do not give a damn about the welfare or education of the next generation. I have no faith in them keeping the schools open and safe in this upcoming school year and my kids will continue to suffer and lag behind their peers in other major cities (like NYC - which is also run by Dems) that have led the way and stood the ground on behalf of kids who need to be educated in public schools. What happened here sickens me and while I am a life-long supporter of unions, I certainly do not support the WTU and blame them, too.

I'm surprised someone who is very worried about Delta hasn't made the push to require mandatory vaccinations of everyone who can get one.

I don’t know what “we” you are talking about but everyone I know who is planning to follow the Covid rules is also extremely riled up about anti-vax teachers and staff.

I'm glad for the consistency among you and your friends, then.

What are you and your friends doing about the anti-vax teachers and staff? That's not a "gotcha" question. I'm wondering if there's any sort of movement to mandate vaccinations.

I know a bunch of people who think it is racist to require vaccinations but consider the travel quarantine purely an issue for white people, who should follow it. Trust that I don't understand much of the logic there.

I'm the teacher and thanks for the support. I think getting the vaccine will make schools safer, not just for the kids but also for me and the other teachers.
