Can someone explain AEM to me?

Pretty much all of them left AEM. APE's FB page has great coverage of school news, plus they also create their own analyses, graphs and graphics based on APS' data. APE's FB page's coverage of APS' misuse of the ARP funds has been great journalism.

AEM is just the typical people, bullying and arguing. Moderator is absent as always.

I’m becoming convinced that the very active SR supporters on all of the boards are just trolls. They want to get a ride out of the rest of us with their insults and taunting if we don’t agree with their every point or tactics. Ignore them instead. I mean, everyone else is. 🤭 APE isn’t lifting a finger. They have the right idea.

When SJH is being the voice of reason, you KNOW it’s bad.

And APE won't be happy until everyone gets Covid and they run APS into the ground, drive out even more teachers and get their vouchers for private school.

This is the definition of an ad hominem attack. This right here is why I can’t take you seriously.

SR, you need better spokespeople. You’ve become an echo chamber and the only people listening to you now are your supporters.

I’m sure you made that same comment to the poster above calling people “stupid”.

Right?

DP. You do realize though that calling someone stupid is totally different than telling someone who is content with the mitigation plan that they're going to get COVID and destroy APS. WTH?

Mitigation is a thing in Arlington County. Vaccine mandates for staff/volunteers, COVID testing, now outdoor lunch at all schools. We might not have the right air cleaners, I don't know, but they are better than nothing. I'd understand the outrage better if we lived in Florida or Texas.

I don't like the quarantine async plan, but it's all our damn faults. If we didn't complain so much about concurrent education last Spring, maybe they wouldn't have eliminated it. But I really do think we will be okay. The fear mongering needs to stop.

No, the fear mongering will continue, and from their perspective it needs to be continued. Right now APS is going back to in-person school without fulfilling 100% of SR's demands. When things turn out to be not perfect, but manageable in that environment, they are going to look like panicky fools.

Put yourself in ventilation lady's shoes. Consciously or unconsciously, she's got to be concerned right now about what happens when our air filters turn out to be not perfect, but good enough. She's got to be wondering if people are going to think (correctly) that she was just an overwrought crank whose undiagnosed anxiety disorder caused her to stake out a position on an issue she has no background or expertise in.

The window to get APS 100% aligned with their goals is closing. If they get APS to comply, when things turn out OK (as they were inevitably going to do) they'll take the credit. They'll say to themselves "no, I'm not a crank. I can leave that ativan script unfilled." But until they get APS to that point, they're going to get shriller and louder until school starts and their window of opportunity closes.

The APEs are right here on DCUM, clearly. Taking potshots at those who have gotten the safety measures that they now tout.

Anyone remember winter 2021?

APE winter 2021: We don't need any of that fancy mitigation - just open the doors! During the surge! Kids don't get or spread Covid!
SR winter 2021: advocated for outdoor lunch, filters, etc. so schools could have a chance to safely open.

And here it is again. SR will take credit for anything and everything, while blaming everybody else that is fine with what we already have. I also see some of the more insulting SR member comments are gone, because whoa. I hope your kids don't use the same language you do. I'm not an APE member at all. I think both groups are ridiculous.

Oh yes, I remember the APEs on AEM. I almost had to leave, they were so awful. They would say things like "no kid has died in Virginia!"

That one didn't age well. Not that they care, I' sure, I guess they just moved on to other arguments. But that one just came across as so heartless.

I have a child with long Covid, another family member with long Covid and an extended family member died of Covid.

My child is not fortunate enough to go to one of the APS schools with newer HVAC. She's in an older building and the HVAC barely works.

I'm having an extremely hard time reading some of the comments on here. They are just so insensitive and out of touch with our reality and concerns. And no, please don't just tell me that my child can stay home.

We must ban all cars in Virginia too and swimming pools (way more kids die of both causes per year than the handful that die of COVID). If it saves 1 life.

I'd love to see the certified medical diagnosis for Long COVID in your child. It is EXTREMELY rare in children, and usually only affects the already immunocompromised.

Had a family member die of COVID this year. They were 85 years old and in nursing home already (which describes pretty much your average COVID death). And another family died of a heart attack. Every death is tragic, but we don't shut down the country for such things.

I think you need mental help, not any type of medical help.

And this is why it's hard to read these comments on here. I put our situation out there and immediately got this horrid response.

I am so sorry some D'bag wrote that to you. It was truly horrific and represents the worst in people. I'm sorry for your child and your family members. Please know that not everyone on here and in Arlington sucks as bad as that commenter.

How many children have died in VA with COVID in 18 months (no data on from)? 2!!!
https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/second-covid19-child-death-in-virginia/65-73eb61a6-d920-4657-9d19-aeb2c147d398

We know in the US out of the 300 or so kids that died "with" COVID, researchers from Johns Hopkins were only able to find 1 child who didn't have any significant comorbidities, like leukemia.

Meanwhile, there were 18 drowning deaths of kids in VA last year:
https://www.wric.com/news/virginia-news/drownings-decreased-in-virginia-in-2020-but-whats-happening-in-2021/

So yes, that statement did age very well.
