Can someone explain AEM to me?

Maybe there will be mass unenrollment. What I'm hearing though is that many people are leaving their private schools to reenroll their kids in APS. Five days of school is back! Yay!

I guess you have a horrible source then. APS already disclosed in early May that 2,000 of the 2,700 students that left are not coming back next year (300 of that 2,700 didn't respond to the survey and APS said you could also assume they were almost all not coming back). There were 3,500 total and they had not surveyed them all.

That of course didn't include people who couldn't get their kids out of APS this year (private schools were completely full by February) and didn't provide notice they were leaving until the end of school.

You are wasting your time arguing with these people. As you can see, these people will make up stories when it doesn't suit their narrative. I guess she didn't realize you were citing information APS already released.

Don't both of you know that APS's data can never be trusted? They don't know what's happening over the next year. They didn't even survey most of the private school families that left. I should know. I was one of them. My kids are going back to their neighborhood schools in the fall. APS will find out when I enroll them again in the upcoming weeks.

APS has a rude awakening awaiting them.

Haha. I homeschooled last year and just called Barrett to find out how to get them back there. No survey from Syphax ended up in my inbox either.

I think we can all agree that APS is one hot mess.

Shame on you for waiting this long to re-enroll.

Thanks for the belly laugh but nah. I don't owe APS or you anything.

There was a large contingent of APS families at our private school last year, and we had until May 31 to renew our contracts. We'll see how many of them trickle in over the summer.

Oh, ok. So former private school families will intentionally wait out of spite. Then they’ll complain about class size issues APS didn’t have time to plan for. Got it. Good plan.

DP. I didn't inform APS that we were coming back until last week either. It wasn't about spite. I just waited until school was officially over because our principal was overwhelmed. Your bitterness over last year is showing. Not s good look.

+1 to the bolded. In normal years the reason that they base enrollment data on 30-Sep student population is that kids are still literally showing up at schools throughout that entire first month without having registered earlier. Families who didn't know to register, families who just moved to the area, families who simply forgot.

The year my son was in 2nd grade they had to re-do class lists three days before school started because they had a handful of kids enroll at the last minute and they had to pull a teacher over from another school and rebalance the classes. This wasn't kindergarten, this was second grade. Our family stayed with APS this past year, but based on years past have no confidence in APS's ability to know for sure how many children will show up on day 1 at any given school. This year could be even worse as families who had gone private or homeschooled wait until the last possible second to make a decision to ensure APS doesn't yank the rug out from under all of us with an 11th hour concurrent surprise or something.

School systems ask parents to alert them as soon as possible as it’s a challenge to have to shift classes, find new teachers, etc at the last minute. Yes it’s still June but PP knows what they’re doing as they indicated they are returning but waiting “weeks” to re/enroll for some reason. It’s already going to be a logistical difficult/different year. Why add to that?

+1. APS has NO IDEA what their enrollment will be. Counting is extremely difficult for them. Yet again it will be another catch up game. How long until they throw their hands in the air and claim it’s too complicated to deal with massively unbalanced enrollment among schools.

Count me as another one that wasn’t surveyed but we’re never coming back.

I 100% agree this will be a huge issue. People have no faith in APS and will keep their options open. I have no problem with that. Based on APS’ performance last year you need to keep your options open and look out for yourself.

It’s going to be a hot mess next year.

And by your calculations, how many should APS expect next year per grade level per school?

You realize waiting until the last minute to enroll just screws over your own child right? They are obligated to take them, but if they don’t know early enough how many kids will be in each grade, they don’t have time to hire qualified teachers. You end up with larger class sizes or the bottom of the barrel staffing wise (teachers hired in August are probably not anyone’s first pick).
