O The 2021 kids have really had some tough breaks.
The 2021 kids might have had it a tad rougher than last year's admits, but their college experience is likely going to be a lot better than the 2019, 2020 kids who have spent their first year(s) taking remote classes, wearing masks, limited campus activities, crappy food, very strict on-campus policies etc. I feel better for my 2021 kid than my 2019 kid because it looks like fall is going to be fairly normal with required vaccination, so he will likely get a more "normal" college experience. My 2019 kid just hit her stride after freshman fall at UVA, then had to stay home after March 2020. Classes were mainly on-line fall and spring ( and living in the dorms with a ton of restrictions and limited group in person activities). My 2021 kid will start college in a much better way. I don't see much difference in the the toughness of their admits--both were top 10% FCPS students with strong GPAs/SATs and they got into and rejected by schools in roughly the same pattern. The only difference was my 2019 DD didn't get into W&M, but 2021 DS did (but I think that has more to do with gender than Covid) and my daughter got into VT (non-engineering) but DS didn't (engineering).
I wholeheartedly agree with this. Starting college last year was terrible. I know of one kid who spent their first year “at” Stanford in their parents basement.
