But why would that happen? Experts are predicting things will get worse in the fall in terms of COVID, not better. It's just not a realistic plan. If they couldn't do it now, aren't they LESS likely to do it in October?

+1000 Burgundy is going to be telling everyone at the end of September that the odd 1/2 day schedule they are proposing will not be happening in October after all. Prepare for DL through the fall and winter. I predict on campus school in April. But maybe not until September 2021.

This is totally what's going to happen.

Dear Burgundy Administration and Board:
If you think people are angry now, if this happens with no warning, families are going to go absolutely INSANE. If this is a likely outcome, you need to come to terms with it NOW and start preparing families NOW.

If the teachers say they need X, Y, Z in order to safely teach in classrooms, are X, Y, Z something you can offer? If not, you need to prepare families NOW.

Figure out what safety measures teachers want that you CAN put into place, and survey teachers NOW, asking - if we put, X and Y into place (but not Z), will you feel safe returning to campus?

I see administration traveling down the same happy road they were in June with regard to an October opening. They are going full steam ahead as if it is a definite... essentially, repeating the same mistake that has people so pissed off in the first place. Please learn from the first time around. It is clear from the tone of EL's recent email welcoming families to school that you all just don't get it. Completely tone deaf.

And by the way, I am on your side. I think the plans you've outlined are decent. But you need to be honest with yourselves so you can be honest with the rest of us.

YES. The meeting last night and EL’s welcome email were both tone deaf. If they pull the rug out on October like they did September it will be the death knell for this school.

Would it help if they had a clearly defined set of plans with criteria (Phase level, positive test rate, etc) for determining when each plan would be implemented? Some of this has to be dependent on factors outside of their control but it sounds like clarity would go a long way.

I can’t believe anyone still believes that we are going on campus on any sort of consistent basis this entire year. Yes. There will be “experiences” the kids are out for the year without a vaccine. Period. You’ve got to move on and make other arrangements. For your own sanity.

I found that odd too.

The school tried to open - I believe in good faith, and with involvement from all stakeholders - and found it wasn't safe to bring everyone back on campus in large numbers. The fall may be worse, but no one can predict. Should the school give up on trying to bring kids back because there is a likelihood that it won't work? Simply say DL for everyone until vaccine? They get burned for trying to open and burned for not opening. It is an impossible situation.

Wrong wrong wrong. They did not try to open and they did not involve all stakeholders appropriately and they did not find they couldn’t safely reopen. They failed to appropriately empower teachers and teachers retaliated by refusing to go to work and now the students will suffer.

I'm not the PP, but I really think they did try to open, their process was just flawed... namely, their leadership and comunications with teachers.

Yes, this would be extemely helpful. Also, what safety measures are the staff requesting that have yet to be implemented?

Agreed. This is the question that needs to be answered.

The holdout teachers likely didn't say "October half days" will make them feel safe to come into the classroom.

Also not a single question I posed for the townhall has been answered. When are these division specific zooms with Jeff and Elizabeth supposed to occur? More radio silence from admin.

This is exactly the issue. The town hall was all about “October half day” and we will return to school 5 days a week in October. Why are they so confident this will happen? Why will the teachers suddenly decide they are totally okay with in person learning EVERY day (not hybrid) 3 weeks after DL starts? Teachers that are refusing in person class now are suddenly going to feel great about it in October when kids start getting colds, allergies and the flu? The administration needs to be clear and explain: WHY WILL TEACHERS BE OKAY RETURNING IN OCTOBER IF THEY ARE UNWILLING IN SEPTEMBER? There is no logic to this plan. Burgundy needs to tone down the focus on a 5 day return in October, and focus on making DL amazing.

Is there any chance that — given the uproar and outrage and backlash and terrible PR this has resulted in for the school — they will revisit the September remote + scenario and let our kids on campus more in September?
