You don’t know that.
He made a split second decision.

If his default reaction for split-second decisions is shoot everyone around him then he shouldn't carry a gun.

There’s no default reaction of the shooter has a head injury.

So the apologists have moved from "cops don't have to use proportional force, they're trained and have to act aggressively to keep us safe" to "this man wasn't in his right mind you can't hold him to any standard whatsoever"? Just so I'm clear, I'm guessing you still think he should get the cop get out of jail free card even though now you're not pretending he was acting as a cop (off duty or otherwise) but was just a brain injured shoot-em-up zombie, right?

He’s under this scrutiny because he’s a cop. If he were just any layperson we wouldn’t be talking about what kind of training he had. That’s not fair to him.

Perhaps. and I would imagine that if the video shows he was truly out cold, the defense would go that direction. But to me, it's just another reason why people shouldn't carry around guns as commonly as they do their wallets. So many things that could go wrong in an instant. Three people gunned down in a Costco! And the article below shows that more could have easily been killed as the officer opened fire.

David Winslow, a lawyer for the officer, told The Los Angeles Times that his client had been shopping with his wife and 18-month-old son when he was knocked to the ground by a large man, later identified as Mr. French, while they were standing in line waiting to taste food samples.

Mr. Winslow, who could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday, told The Los Angeles Times that the officer was briefly knocked unconscious.

Dianne Bawit, a 21-year-old student at California State University San Marcos, said she had been shopping for bottled water when she saw a man, who she later learned was the police officer, falling to the ground. She said he had appeared to be in distress.

“He fell pretty hard because I heard a pretty big thump on the ground,” Ms. Bawit said. “He looked like he had a heart attack.”

Ms. Bawit said she initially went to help the officer, but retreated as the altercation escalated.

“He stood up by himself. He pulled out his handgun and starts triggering five to seven shots,” Ms. Bawit said, adding that she was within 10 feet of the men and then took cover. “I was hiding in between the meat aisle, behind the freezer section. I thought I was going to be dead, too.”

You can claim victimhood, but I believe he would still be under scrutiny for gunning down 3 people in a Costco, including 1 disabled and 2 elderly!

Read this and tell me America has not become a war zone.
The shooting on Friday was the first of two episodes of gun violence at Costco locations in California in under 72 hours. A gunman seriously wounded his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend in the parking lot of a Chula Vista, Calif., store on Monday before killing himself. The shooting took place about 100 miles from Corona.

Wait, what? He wasn't arrested, Costco hasn't released the video, his job put out a press release supporting him, and half the people on this thread have decided it's a totally normal reaction for a person who gets pushed in a shopping center to merk an entire family in response. You think if a person who was not a cop shot 3 people and killed one in a suburban Costco they would be walking around free and people would be lining up to defend them?

You're insane.

You are seriously irrational.
If an off duty officer is attacked, they are going to react.
If in the course of the attack, they sustain a blow to the head, they may not make the best decisions/use of their training. How about don’t throw cops to the ground? Don’t attack families? That’s an easy way not to be shot.

Anyone who shoots unarmed people at Costco will be criticized for their murderous actions.

He's only being scrutinized because he will get away with it.

Yes, anyone is going to react to being pushed. That's why we need to ban guns -- so being pushed doesn't escalate into shooting into a crowd.

This. If he were an average Joe, people would wonder why he was gunning people down in Costco . But since he's police, he can claim trauma/PTSD, trigger reflexes or whatever, and a jury will let him off.

Wow - he fired several times?!

People should be able to go to Costco without getting shot by off-duty cops. WTF?!

If this officer has a history of brutality, it will change my mind, but I’m waiting for details.

Don’t attack a cop, and you won’t have a problem.

I await any evidence of anyone being “thrown to the ground” or “attacked.”
