This seems to be the linchpin, to convince Manchin, Murkowski and Collins to hold off on approving a "Motion to Proceed" until an FBI investigation can be undertaken in light of the allegations. They may also ask to hear from other witnesses.

This wouldn't mean they oppose Judge Kavanaugh on the merits. In effect, though, they stop the clock yet again while their conditions are met. The question then is whether the rest of the Republican caucus can bear to hold off and take the chance on what facts come to light out of such a probe.

If McConnell cuts bait at that point, and the President immediately withdraws the Kavanaugh nomination and submits a new one, they could jam that through before the new Senate is seated on January 3.

I just do not understand their loyalty to someone who is completely, wholly unfit for office. Is Mueller coming soon? I just don’t understand why otherwise they’d be obsessed with someone who has perjured, is $400K in debt to someone, talks about the Clintons (still?!).... what’s the love for Kavanaugh?

He's on record having said that sitting Presidents shouldn't be indicted. Not many jurists have said that. This all goes back to Trump's shady illegal behavior and his fear of Mueller and all the other investigations he's under.

But why the hurry? They could have put a polish on this third if they had slowed down: why the insane hurry? I sure wish Mueller telegraphed his moves.

Because mid-terms are coming in 6 weeks, and the Republicans know there's a (small) chance they could lose both houses of Congress.

Nah, he will never look back. What he will probably have is a chip on his shoulder.

It’s just all so shabby and unAmerican.

+1 If he were innocent he would have welcomed an investigation. There's a lot of people in Chevy Chase who won't feel comfortable having him around their kids anymore.

People in Chevy Chase are the most shallow folks I have met. They will absolutely have their children around s SCJ, even if he has a history of sexual assault.

You probably haven't met many people. And I'm from Chevy Chase, and people have been talking about how we won't be able to coach kids' sports anymore.

I live in Chevy Chase and know the Kavanaughs and others in attendance yesterday. They aren’t losing friends. There are plenty of social climbers willing to set aside morals and ethics to be associated with them. Trust me.

In fairness, he has a history of being accused of an historical sexual assault as a minor, 36 years ago, which only came up due to an intensely partisan confirmation hearing where one party was actively searching for any reason not to confirm him. Don’t assume that everyone is unable to see the difference.

Maybe the old white dudes you hate so much should take away everything they have established and invented. Oh, but that wouldn’t leave you with much, would it, hun?

Also they’re all Catholic. None have had problems with the church’s sexual scandals. Please!

This. These people (not all of Chevy Chase but the prep school-country club set) are all about power and access and they would not hesitate for a second to saddle up to Kavanaugh if it meant that they could name drop the next day.

These people have no shame. Think of all of those women and men who despite clearly knowing what Brett and his GTP buddies did in the 80s and that Devils Triangle has nothing to do with a drinking game or that Renate Alumnus wasn't some heartfelt ode to a sweet girl, signed statements of support. He's one of them. They circle the wagons.

Social climbers will throw any one under a bus to get ahead. Avoid them at all costs.

Does no one notice how rich people live here ? School, games, every weekend away either at your close by resort home in St Michael’s or lounging at someone else’s luxury place. Parties. Lunches. What a life.

Also, did high schools typically have games over the summer months back then?
