Wed no school or 2hr delay?

Ha ha! But people just love criticizing others. Bad arguments do not deter them.

I'm glad that your family can easily absorb having a parent take 3 to 5 days off work in a row, without pay for many of us (myself included.). Maybe realize we're not all as lucky as you are and have a little compassion?

We will be unpaid too. I'd rather my spouse be alive than risk driving in this. We were unpaid during the shutdown as well. You think you are the only one. My spouse gets zero PTO. We plan our finances around it. Why don't you?

The people scared of snow can take time off. Everyone with common sense can go to work and school.

Ok, so go to work and figure out your child care and stop expecting minimum wage workers to come in if they are not able. You can afford to pay for help...what do you do summers and holidays?

So other institutions are opening tomorrow. MCPS should be able to get their act together to open on Wednesday, probably with a delay.

No, schools are typically a full day (at least) behind everyone else. And everyone else includes the liberal leave people not coming in tomorrow.

Still not plowed at all here in our SS neighborhood!

They could definitely open child care tomorrow and certainly on Wednesday if they wanted to. They just don't want to because they dgaf about child care.

I don’t know about tomorrow, and I don’t know if the parking lots near us are cleared (questionable given the rest of our neighborhood). But I agree that reopening child care should be a priority.

The closures/delays are self-perpetuating. MCPS didn't bother trying to prepare schools today because they already closed tomorrow. So now if things don't go smoothly tomorrow, they'll need to close Wednesday, despite it being entirely avoidable.

Wednesday will be closed. I hope they let childcare open. I am skeptical.

If Taylor has building services work tomorrow, a delayed opening on Wednesday is completely possible.

I guess anything is possible, but I’ve never seen a district in this area open in these conditions and the county isn’t even projecting having all residential streets passed through at least once until tomorrow afternoon.

Even if they don't get to all neighborhoods until tomorrow afternoon, that still means Wednesday should be fine.

They’re saying they’ll get to all neighborhoods at least once, which typically is insufficient as a back to school metric.

It's absolutely sufficient. At least, it should be.

I don't understand why you're so willing to accept incompetence in decision-making.

I liked snow days as a kid and my kids like them now, so I’ll admit that’s how I lean. I do hope they open childcare for people who need it. But I also know that plowing side streets only once when it’s this icy can lead to some pretty dangerous conditions. We tend to have a higher bar for student safety than we do for other businesses opening. I’m okay with that.

I don't get it- what do you think plowing another time accomplishes? We haven't been getting more snow.

One pass doesn’t usually mean totally clearing the road.

It certainly makes it safe to drive on. Isn't that the point?

Probably if you have a decent car and don’t live on a hill and depending on ice. Again, higher standard usually for schools and students.

Which is what?

Closing doesn't help bad drivers. They'll be bad drivers every other day, too. And they're more likely to kill themselves and others when they're driving 50+mph on a snowless day.

It keeps people off the road so plows and emergency crews can get in. Many peole are driving sedans that should not be in this weather.

Typical "if I have to go to work, everyone should have to!" mindset in this forum. Some of us actually care about the safety of kids-in ALL areas of the county no less, not just our own.

MCPS has a whole extra day to get their act together. I'm not saying they're going to open tomorrow. We already know they won't. But they can absolutely open Wednesday.

It’s not just mcps, the county has to plow and many of us don’t get buses and our kids have to walk a mile or two to school and parts of the walk are dangerous roads, some with no sidewalks. And, our streets are either not plowed or sheets of ice.

Most streets will be plowed today, and the remaining will be plowed tomorrow. Plenty of time to open on Wednesday.

If your kids have to walk through snow, put them in boots. Though, likely sidewalks will already be either shoveled or packed down.

I really don't understand you people. Why does snow scare you so much?

No plows at all have come through my neighborhood in close-in Bethesda. Wisconsin is plowed. That's it. No way to get into or out of the neighborhood. I've seen multiple cars get stuck trying - even the slightest incline and they can't make it. And it's a hilly neighborhood. No way can a bus get through here. If they manage to clear it all tomorrow then great, but I highly doubt that will happen. I can't see them going back before Thursday, probably Friday if even then.

Unlikely. The county website and traffic cameras tell another story. I think you're just mad the roads aren't perfectly clear. They're not going to be, but you can still drive on them. Speed limits are supposed to be maximums, not minimums.

Actually I don’t care. I can telework and I take metro to work so if I wanted to go in, I could. Never touch the car during the week. And my kids are thrilled to be home and don’t need much supervision. But when I say no plows I mean none. Zero. Zilch. 7 inches of snow in all neighborhood roads and about half the houses didn’t bother with their sidewalks either.

Those minimum wage workers probably want to work. They're not getting paid otherwise. Why don't you want them to have an opportunity to earn money? Are you going to make up their missed pay?

"In this"? The roads look near-perfect near us. If they're unsafe near you then you shouldn't drive. It's that simple.

And, you think your child care workers streets are fully plowed to the center/school? Think again. You think the public buses can get everywhere? Think again. Get the number of workers and offer to Uber or drive them back and forth to your house, and pay well. Problem solved. What do you do that's so important that you don't have back up child care?

I was estimated to be plowed tomorrow but they just did a quick once around my culdesac an hour ago. Still really rough out there. It is driveable but I can’t imagine full traffic on all this.

Are you volunteering to work at the child care centers? Many of the workers are paid minimum wage and may not be able to get there.

Let the providers decide. You don't know any of these workers and are pretending you can speak for them which is completely gross and disgusting.

Many workers don't get a choice. Clearly you've never worked in child care. Why don't you offer to go pick them up and drive them home if you think its so safe. Your entitlement to risk others' lives is gross and disgusting. You can find another family and rotate child care or find a way to make it work.

You're the one who doesn't want to give them a choice.

Not only not give them a choice, but talk about how little they get paid and then insist that they miss another day of work. Absolutely ghoulish.

Are you offering to drive them? How do they get there? You think they are driving fancy 4wd on minimum wage or can afford uber?

The child care workers you claim to worry about don't live in Bethesda. They live in denser areas upcounty, which have been plowed for most of the day.

Close in Bethesda poster here. My kid had a friend over this afternoon and the mom decided to drive the 6 blocks in the neighborhood instead of walk. Her sedan got stuck and they had to abandon it and walk anyway and then she had to get help digging the car out.

Maybe the plows will be through tonight or tomorrow but if not, the buses sure aren’t coming.
