My child skipped the personal connection (had none) and got in.

In-state FCPS
4.5
1530 SAT
Decent to impressive extracurriculars that support essays and academic/life goals

Same here.

DC in state admit.....

-4.4w/3.98uw (highest rigor possible at private that doesn't allow APs until Junior yr)
-1500
-leadership in several activities/clubs
-club sport
-lots of volunteering (presidents service award)
-4 years of FL

Similar stats with my in-state APS kid. 4.3 weighted, 1520 SAT, 5 APs with some dual enrollment and founded a club, hundreds of volunteer hours, 4 years of Foreign language. No hooks

does the math not matter anymore (what math)?

^ asking as I see people ask about FL more than math level

You need 4 years of math. What else is there to say?

Coming back to say DCUM was spot-on going TO will not get into UVA.

I don’t know if this is just a fluke in my experience, but it seems UVA really is honoring the legacy ruling change from last year.

Agreed - I know several legacy kids that were denied.

It’s different in our circle. Of all the kids my Dc knows who have gotten in, only 1 is not a legacy. All the other non-legacies were deferred. It may not “count”, but the connection to UVA essay does come into play.

And they had nothing else going for them, right?

Can we acknowledge that these kids probably had great applications?

Of course they had great applications. The connection essay is the cherry on top.

Why do they offer this essay if legacy isn’t considered? At the info session, they mentioned writing about a summer class you take at UVA. Besides being a descendent of the slaves that built UVA, a legacy or taking a class or camp, is there another creative way to respond to this essay?

That essay drove us crazy as we had none of that to write to either. My DC wrote about his personal connection he felt when visiting the University (places he went, his experiences, what got him excited to go there). That's it. My advice is not to overthink it. You can write about a connection you made or felt during a visit (if you are out of state, maybe even a virtual visit would be something to write about ).

Agreed. The extent of my DC's "connection" to the school was attending a sports camp there one summer and having an aunt and uncle who graduated from the school. DC is not close to them. It gave DC something to write about, but not much. Weird essay prompt. DC is in their first year and loving it, BTW.

Left it completely blank and still accepted.

OOS yield is only 16% at UVA.
Let's assume this is true. So what. The kids who want to attend don't give a shit about OOS yield, and their families apparently are able to make it work financially. Please move on and let interested families discuss their results.

Maybe oos yield is low bc in order to get in UVA from oos, you may have ability to get in ivy? Look at the oos stats. Or a massive scholarship at own state school. Who cares about yield when the stats of the oos kids are extremely selective.

What cares? UVA is better than Ivies

Omg... better at enrolling kids from NOVA? Better at enrolling kids with 1200 SATs? If you're talking about those, then yes.

Why do you hate community college students so much? You’re the same person whenever UVA is brought up that you mention this. Every public school has community college students including Berkeley, Michigan, and UNC. Your classism is revolting and I wouldn’t surprised if you’re an absolutely disgusting person in real life.

first time posting. DC accepted uva, deferred michigan, @3.93 UW (last time I checked) and 1570 SAT.

Anonymous wrote:In state deferred

I have mixed feelings. DC is in at Michigan, but was going to feel pressure to go to UvA. I think Michigan wins in every category, but tuition and maybe weather. DC never lived UVA, but applied bc it made sense. Am I bummed, relieved or both?

It's all good news as your DC can move forward on their college journey! My DD has made the decision that a deferral means she will go where she's been accepted and is excited about that! She will not be waiting for the next round. Congrats to all the new Hoos!

Michigan is fantastic. She can move ahead with it as her top choice and if Virginia comes through, she can re-evaluate. Congratulations on Michigan!

+1. In-state VA friend was waiisted at UVA but in at Michigan. She was a week into classes at Michigan when she was admitted to UVA. She packed up and went to UVA and never looked back (and her parents were thrilled with in-state tuition.
even if this was in the 90s, this couldn’t happen. I was waitlisted myself and they sent a letter in the summer saying it’s over.

+ 1. There are so many holes in this story.
The parents were excited about in state tuition but also clearly signed a contract to pay the first year OOS at Michigan? And the slot was still available at uva?

It’s definitely a fake story from a UVA booster.

And their desperation is showing. “And never looked back.” So dramatic.

I laughed so hard at that!

SCHEV gets admission data from the universities so if the university is saying what SCHEV is showing is wrong then it probably is. I love how you people think SCHEV has some super secret data that is the ultimate truth just because it confirms your priors.

It's so amusing how very triggered you are by the information posted on SCHEV. If they were posting incorrect information, they would have corrected it. There's nothing in it for them to post something false. Just deal with it.
