Wealthy donors pull funding from from Harvard and U Penn for failure to denounce “antisemitism”

Meh, doesn't seem too atypical for stuff that has gone on at similar colleges for decades. There are always protests, hunger strikes, sit ins, storm admin building etc.

Just the cause of the day changes.

These harvard students can do whatever they like. That’s the beauty of free speech. These donors can also refuse to fund them or give them jobs. Also the beauty of free speech.

This is an easy question.

Would you hire someone who suggested that "George Floyd got what he deserved"?

Me neither.

Crazy fascism here. It was much the same for vocal critics of the Iraq War. They were ostracized and put out of work.
I hope that we can all tow the line of the thought police. Make sure that every thought is in line with the wealthy white donors of the world.

An alternative take would be to, oh, I don’t know, unequivocally condemn the Hamas atrocities.

There has been a big coordinated push by many influential donors at a number of universities for school administrators to ban any student groups related to Palestinian issues, fire professors who voice opposition to Israel’s Palestinian policies, and expel students who support BDS.

This is all coming to a head right now, the rubber is finally meeting the road. These donors have been threatening to pull their money for a looooong time. See The David Project and other similar groups.

Tbh, I don’t think there is anything Penn could have done short of banning any support for Palestinians on campus, including expelling students and firing professors.

I dont see Jewish student unions and Jewish student mobs shouting down pro Palestine speakers and trying to have professors fired like the wokesters. Seems that all people are asking for is for these universities to issue a statement to condemn violent acts of terror. As a non-Jewish person, I’m tired of woke leftists canceling anyone they don’t like and then crying when their tactics are turned against them.

I've been waiting for this for quite a while. I said that the woke leftism would face a huge pushback when things got too outrageous. People are now seeing who we are allowing into the country and how they are influencing our youth. Unfettered immigration was already a huge sore point, even to liberals. Seeing the fruits of years of immigration labor I'm sure was quite startling and served as the needed wake up call.

This has nothing to do with immigration.

It has everything to do with it.

DP I agree but it is larger. This is maga going after “wokeness” and immigrants. They see Israel supporters as useful allies against the browning of America. It’s the same rhetoric as always but it is now getting picked and pushed by the media. Look at the maga attack on liberal education in the New York Times today. The people cheering this on are the anti constitutionalist maga supporters.

I have MAGA but in this case this has nothing to do with it.

It has everything to do with it. It is the same people pushing the same agenda. Let me tell you what will happen. Once everything settles down, there will be a push to limit the number of Jews who are admitted to these universities and colleges. It seems they have too much influence. White nationalists do not consider Jews white and Jew are not Christian. If Palestinians are not people because of their racial make up do you really think Israelis(3/4 non European in origin) are not going to be treated the same way?

Except that is not what was said at all. They were calling for a Israel to stop genocide and apartheid. You using George Floyd as a symbol of Israel is really telling. That is not the story here.

I do think that these students have truly learned something and I hope that they continue the fight. They will never forget the fascism on display and the silencing of black and brown voices. There is a giant machine that will supress minorities in this country from speaking out against Israel and these kids have learned that the hard way. I doubt they'll come around and think that Israel is the good guy in all of this after what they've experienced.

Anti-war protests have been on college campuses for decades. But we have NEVER seen a doxxing like this and it is because you cannot challenge the pro-Israel at all costs crowd. On the upside, the younger generation is seeing that in real time. I hope we can step away from that.

It is chilling to see these people falsely labeled as leftist and terrorists for saying Palestinians should be treated as humans. The media support the action of these extreme conservatives attacks is shocking.

This reminds me of the Harvey Weinstein stuff or the Koch brothers. Have enough money, arrogance, influence, connections, etc and you can basically control the narrative.

I guess if you treat Palestinians as humans you can not have a state of Israel.

+1. Anything that shows Palestinians or Arabs as humans is extinguished immediately. Luckily, social media is a different animal now and can move around big corporations and big money donors trying to silence humanity.

These students are not being cancelled for being against war or having a different political opinion. They are being cancelled for celebrating or justifying the deaths, rapes and kidnaps of women and children.

Firms who disagree with their viewpoint have the right not to hire them. These students are also hypocritical and should go work for firms that align with their views. It’s a win win.

Have you read the Harvard statement? Absolutely victim-blaming.

It's exactly like the racist response to George Floyd ("he had a criminal record", "he was committing a crime").

The rest of your post is, frankly, nonsense.

Of course it's possible to advocate for Palestine without being cancelled--note that all of these law students had job offers from prestigious firms, despite their public affiliation with Palestinian student organizations.

It's when they crossed the line from advocacy to celebrating/justifying terrorism against civilians that they got canceled.

Which was exactly the correct response to the barbarism and idiocy of these statements.

These students are demonstrating through their actions and words that they would not be suitable hires.

If you haven’t noticed the past years doxxing has become the weapon of choice to destroy livelihoods regarding opinions these students disagree with. It’s just the first time it’s been turned on them.

I wouldn't work for someone who publicly threatens a University for holding a literary festival. That's bound to be a shitty employer, life is too short.

I applaud you for your convictions. You and these companies probably aren’t a match can. Unfortunately the UPenn law students for justice of Palestine can’t even hold true to their own stand as they scrub their website in a bid to hold on to their 215k jobs.

Sincere question: what if you were a donor and the literary festival included ideas that you found absolutely reprehensible? (speakers who advocated for shooting refugees at the border, for example).

Wouldn't you stop donating?
