Wealthy donors pull funding from from Harvard and U Penn for failure to denounce “antisemitism”

I agree. I’m so disappointed that an institution like Harvard who knows the true history of they bother to understand it can't see past dollar signs. Instead they are gaslighting and trying to blacklist the truth. Every American has the right to free speech whether you agree or disagree.

This is not a free speech issue. If a donor doesn't like the content of speech affiliated with a university, they are free to place their funds elsewhere.

I wonder how many other organizations, firms, businesses and media groups this is happening to but without the publicity? We all saw what happened at the “liberal” MSNBC.

It is chilling to see these people falsely labeled as leftist and terrorists for saying Palestinians should be treated as humans. The media support the action of these extreme conservatives attacks is shocking.

This reminds me of the Harvey Weinstein stuff or the Koch brothers. Have enough money, arrogance, influence, connections, etc and you can basically control the narrative.

I guess if you treat Palestinians as humans you can not have a state of Israel.

No that is not what they are doing. They are using the conservative play book of attacking individuals to silence them. This is exactly what Trump and the conservative do every day.

Not giving money to people whose opinions they disagree is attacking them to silence them. Ridiculous opinion.

Crazy fascism here. It was much the same for vocal critics of the Iraq War. They were ostracized and put out of work.
I hope that we can all tow the line of the thought police. Make sure that every thought is in line with the wealthy white donors of the world.

An alternative take would be to, oh, I don’t know, unequivocally condemn the Hamas atrocities.

There has been a big coordinated push by many influential donors at a number of universities for school administrators to ban any student groups related to Palestinian issues, fire professors who voice opposition to Israel’s Palestinian policies, and expel students who support BDS.

This is all coming to a head right now, the rubber is finally meeting the road. These donors have been threatening to pull their money for a looooong time. See The David Project and other similar groups.

Tbh, I don’t think there is anything Penn could have done short of banning any support for Palestinians on campus, including expelling students and firing professors.

I dont see Jewish student unions and Jewish student mobs shouting down pro Palestine speakers and trying to have professors fired like the wokesters. Seems that all people are asking for is for these universities to issue a statement to condemn violent acts of terror. As a non-Jewish person, I’m tired of woke leftists canceling anyone they don’t like and then crying when their tactics are turned against them.

This. The fact that my university, which has something to say about every other cause, couldn't at first bring itself to call the massacre of 1000 Jews and the brutal rape and abduction of women and children "terrorism" has been really telling for me. Something is deeply, deeply wrong with the value systems developing within the academy.

I don't know what to think of *donors* being the ones to inject a note of sanity. This is a really complicated matter and I don't have good predictions about how that will go.

There is a lot to say about the Palestinian Writers Festival, though. The most obvious thing, of course, was this esteemed guest:

+1000. Couldn’t even bring themselves to say killing women and children wasn’t ok.

Meh, doesn't seem too atypical for stuff that has gone on at similar colleges for decades. There are always protests, hunger strikes, sit ins, storm admin building etc.

Just the cause of the day changes.

These harvard students can do whatever they like. That’s the beauty of free speech. These donors can also refuse to fund them or give them jobs. Also the beauty of free speech.

They can take down that website but every firm nowadays do background checks before hiring.

I've been waiting for this for quite a while. I said that the woke leftism would face a huge pushback when things got too outrageous. People are now seeing who we are allowing into the country and how they are influencing our youth. Unfettered immigration was already a huge sore point, even to liberals. Seeing the fruits of years of immigration labor I'm sure was quite startling and served as the needed wake up call.

This has nothing to do with immigration.

DP I agree but it is larger. This is maga going after “wokeness” and immigrants. They see Israel supporters as useful allies against the browning of America. It’s the same rhetoric as always but it is now getting picked and pushed by the media. Look at the maga attack on liberal education in the New York Times today. The people cheering this on are the anti constitutionalist maga supporters.

The conservative playbook?

This is straight cancel culture. And both sides are playing the game.
