Maybe Symone will run as an independent? |
He sits on SHAB according to his website. Maybe he is the ventilation guy? |
He joined SHAB the same week he decided to run. |
From her announcement email the first issue listed: Our Mental Health Crisis Three weeks ago, issues of mental health and substance use in APS were brought into sharp relief. Parents and community activists had been sounding the alarm, but it took a tragic loss and other traumatic events to bring full community focus and the necessary urgency to these concerns. So what have I been doing? On the Friday Wakefield closed, I joined in a march of love and support organized by ASHPA leaders. The following Monday, I and the rest of Green Valley Civic Association executive leadership heard from ACPD and began discussing ideas to support Green Valley students and residents, a discussion that continues. At the recent Arlington Dems Second Saturday breakfast, I sponsored the event and coordinated a moderated discussion on mental health in our schools, featuring a county board member and an Arlington Schools Hispanic Parents Association (ASHPA) leader. There is much more to do. Our upcoming budget cycle must prioritize mental health and APS needs county support. APS must have a concrete plan for in-school safety and communication with parents. I will be following these issues closely. |
so she marched and discussed and will follow the issue. meh, get back to me when there is real action and commitment. |
Oh good lord. So, let's review, we have - the leader of a divisive lobbying group in Arlington who has no other relevant leadership experience - a PTA president who a lot of people didn't seem to like - a young upstart with political ambitions and no real ties to APS |
I'm learning towards the PTA president. At least she ran something relevant. Not everyone liked her but that's what happens when you put yourself out there. There are some crazy parents and you can't please everyone. Plus I wonder if the people badmouthing her now are from another campaign who see her as a threat. A young person is really interesting and I will consider him but he'd be more appealing if he had better ties to Arlington and APS. I could really get behind a former 22 year old APS student with insight into the schools and the students' needs. Not sure about this guy. Do like his campaign's focus on students though. And then we get to Miranda. I talked with her several times last go round and decided not to vote for her. She was too set and rigid on one viewpoint and couldn't see others perspective, or bring groups together. I truly think APE set back the cause of opening schools because they couldn't or didn't want to try to understand or work with others with different perspectives and needs - teachers who were fearful of going back into germy schools, Hispanic communities who were impacted by the pandemic in different ways than they were and wanted/needed to stay virtual, or people who just wanted some better safety measures in schools. That's not a road to good governance. |
That’s a pretty good start for someone who’s not even in elected office yet. Organized a forum, listened to other voices in the community. We need the county and APS to work together more on these issues. Impressed she’s talking about it. |
So back to Maggie Slye, what happened to her campaign? I though she was running? |
eh, it's a way to look like she is doing something without really doing anything. we dont need lip service. i looked at her website on this and its just word salad. |
I was going to say the same thing. I don't see huge differences, and interestingly, both are white women strongly emphasizing their history and engagement with the black community. Don't get me wrong, I think both women sound good on paper overall, and I haven't met either of them. |
LOL. This isn't bad. The first 2 have insights relevant to how APS runs, and they can see deficiencies from the parent perspective. We had some terrible SB members before current and most recent versions of the COVID and post-COVID SB. Whatever faults the recent/current SB members have, it's a major improvement over where things were 5+ years ago. Based on what I've seen, the first 2 candidates continue that trend. |
How’s it less than other forums that were organized? She had a leader from Ashpa and a county board member there. I’ll give her credit for that. |
There is no ventilation guy (or gal), lol. And the 22 yr old has no connections to Arlington and doesn't give a shit about APS. He's one hop, skip and jump away from moving on to other pastures. |
How is she different from the others? My biggest concern is teacher retention. |
