What happened to this California family?

Can they do that? I think COD for anyone is public record, on their death certificate. Doesn't mean it's posted online, but there is a paper record that is public. Meaning- a reporter will go access it and post it online.

I think this is right, can anyone speak to CA law specifically?

Looks like it will be HS by process of elimination at this point. Why would the family not want that released? And which family's wishes would control? I believe the Sheriff's Office will make an announcement.

In the meantime, there are some interesting comments on the SO FB page re: close calls others have had on the Savage Lundy trail in heat.

What is the "So FB" page?

Sheriff Office Mariposa County.

Has it started yet? I don't see anything on their page.

Hypothermia and dehydration?

The emphasis on temps and show of the terrain suggests heat exhaustion/stroke.

I can’t hear it. I guess I’ll just wait for a recap.

He said that they only found one water bladder on the family, and it was empty. I think that's different from earlier reports, they initially said there was "some" water left.

Water from the river tested positive for anatoxin a, but no evidence that anyone from the family ingested it.

Hyperthermia. Which, apparently, will not be considered heat stroke by the pedantics on this thread

There was enough to test for toxins. Practically empty might be more correct.

What a tragedy. Just a stupid mistake, going out on such a hot day. But just as most of the sane posters on this thread thought.

That’s awful. Still confused about how they ended up in those positions…the dog especially. I wonder who died first…

Also, I was a staunch FA believer.

I was wrong.

That's terrible - I am sorry to hear. I would have thought it would have happened to them all but I guess she was doing better so he sat to wait for her to get help and she didn't make it? So sad.

I would NOT have thought it would have happened to all of them

There was nothing significant about the positions. They died where they were, there was enough support to keep them upright until rigor mortis started setting in. No wind, no movement, the bodies just stayed put. And maybe the environmental conditions play into rigor mortis process.
