Weirdo Videotaped Myself and Kids On Vacation?

Anonymous
We were waiting to get a seat at a restaurant (husband wasn't able to attend) and I was talking to him (my husband) on the phone when someone pointed their Iphone directly at us and kept it pointed at us for 5 minutes. The weirdo was standing and we were sitting on a bench. At first, I thought I must be imagining things but the longer he had his phone DIRECTLY pointed at us the more uncomfortable I felt. Finally, I got up for the purpose of going behind him (from a distance) as the waiting area was large to see if he was taking video of us and he quick as lightning dropped the phone as soon as I got up, I have no proof that he was videotaping us but his behavior was very strange. Has this ever happened to you? If this is indeed what happened, why would someone do this? I am not a supermodel and a little overweight. My kids are cute 10 and under. Do I need to worry? It happened several hours from our house.

I don't think you need to worry. However, I think the thing to do is find the non-emergency phone police number for the location where this happened and report it. Give a description of the man, where you were etc. I did neighborhood watch training a couple years back and the police informed us that reporting this sort of suspicious behavior can sometimes help piece things together later.

Maybe he was watching a video? Was he holding the phone out at arms length or just holding it in a way that it was pointed at you?

Whip out your phone and videotape the guy next time.

I was picking up shells on a pretty empty beach in NC a few years ago when we noticed that there was a guy taking pictures of me. My husband approached him and he agreed to delete the pictures on the spot. He claimed that he was just taking artistic photographs, but I can guarantee that there is nothing artistic about me in a swimsuit.

Closer to arms length and pointed DIRECTLY at me. I thought at first he was oblivious but when I moved and he dropped the phone suspiciously....it really freaked me out. I'll report it tomorrow. I wish I had thought to take a picture of him.

It's weird, but you shouldn't worry. I take pics of people when I'm out and about when there's something about them that I find interesting or amusing. Sometimes they can't see what I see in that situation, but you have to know my sense of humor to get it. I've never taken video, but pictures yes.

I would never come kill you in your sleep. And just because I take your picture doesn't mean I magically know your name or where you live.

Generally post them on FB with a witty-to-me-and-my-friends comment.
I'm an artist and do photography, and in over a decade of snapping pics of people or things, only once has anyone said to me "Could you please not take a picture of me like this?"

If I caught you taking a pic of me without asking you'd have trouble finding your camera because I'd shove it so far up your butt.

Settle down, Rambo. I don't stick a camera underneath a bathroom stall door or into your kitchen window. If you're out in public, you allow people to see you. If they want to preserve what they see, they are allowed.
