ECNL moving to school year part 2

Big GA club had a club meeting with all the team managers regarding BY-SY. Initially they told all the team managers that Sept-Dec players would be moving from their current team to the grade below. They also said that Aug birthdays would have the option to play up or down a grade. Immediately all the team managers started freaking out because with older players that are currently going through recruitment their current number is how college coaches will know who they are. The team managers also brought up how can you allow an August birthday to play down when it would completely screw them for college recruiting. (Our school district starts in mid Aug)

Apparently club leadership never thought of any of this so they decided to back down and said that all Sept-Dec players would have to choice to play down if they want to. They had no answer for Aug birthdays other than acknowledging the issue.

Nobody really believes leadership will let players choose if they stay with a team or play down if they're a current trapped player. Consensus is that individual coaches will pick and choose the players they like and thats just how it will be.

This sounds like the most made up garbage I have ever read on this thread and that means something. Why would team managers be freaking out over other people’s kids and what effect those kids recruiting ? Kids that might not even choose to stay on that same team or club next season.

Also the league dictates the rules on Aug kids not an individual club as they would not put themselves at a disadvantage against other local competition.

The only thing I agree with is coaches will ask specific players to stay up but will have no say over that ultimately as parents and players will most likely decide that or if they even want to play GA anymore.

It’s not up to the parents, clubs, coaches or team managers.

Oh good we agree that Aug birthday players should not be playing down a grade even if technically they're able to depending on when their school starts.

No one agrees with you. All we agree on is that you call everyone cheaters and that you are lobbying for a version on grade alignment where your kid benefits.

Name the club? My daughters GA club coach at Reds FC already told the 4 Aug to December players on the team two of which have Aug birthdays and are in different grades that all 4 will be eligible to play the same age group again next year or they can play up.

What you wrote makes no sense. Players can always play up and if they're BY now and a trapped player they're already playing up.

The issue isnt playing up. The issue is Aug birthdays playing down on a team where 99% of the players will be a grade below them in school.

It would be like an Aug birthday playing up a grade In BY then dropping down 2 soccer levels in SY and playing on a team with players a grade below them in school.

Me and all the team moms apparently.

And anyone else with a brain that understands how recruiting works when players get older.

Grade has nothing to do with it. It’s just a 12-month window (1-August-2016 to 31-July-2017 for example). -The should not be able to play an age-bracket down. And why would August birthday want to? They win as the new oldest team member of the group now. If they play up, they would be the youngest of the group and at a physical disadvantage.

Keep fighting it. Watch what happens.

Clubs value olders college committments over littles wins. Because of this they wont let Aug birthdays play down a grade.

What you are really freaking out about is the fact that many of these kids you think will be so negatively impacted will have to play in their new age group or not make the top team.

Exactly what I said would happen. Theres no way clubs will allow players to play on a grade down team when they're a year older in school. It just doesnt make sense because that player would be unrecruitable. Aug birthdays that didn't make the A team with your grade welcome to the B team with your grade. Clubs and apparently team managers aren't going to allow playing down a grade.

I never thought about all the jersery number issues this is going to create.

The issue with Aug players playing down a grade is easily solved. Leagues just need to implement a rule that says players must play on a team that thats predominantly their grade in school.
Not allowed.

No month can play down, everybody has to play on age or up if good enough.

The nuance that known of us definitely know is if the leagues will push players to play with school year. The reason people are highlight august is that the kids could either be young or old for their grade. While there is the seasonal year guidance, there may be secondary guidance that states, if a player falls within a seasonal year that aligns them outside of their school year, then that player should play with their grade. While I dont think this will be the case, I suppose it’s possible. I think this would be more of a soft guidance than rule. The reality is, leagues and clubs will keep it simple and you will play within the new seasonal year regardless of grade. The very few outliers will self calibrate if and when that time matters.

The guy saying Aug kids can’t play on the grade below their actual grade (even though they’re in the correct age range) is nuts. Clubs will not force those kids to play up. If they’re good enough, they will play up just like we see now. And the kids that play in their age range but not on grade will be just fine. The thought that a college coach would dismiss a really good Aug player because they’re not playing with their “grade” but are still in the age range is just stupid. College coaches aren’t dumb. They evaluate talent for a living. And guess what? They’re all at the same tournaments and showcases. If there is a good kid playing on field 6, even though they’re watching another team on field 10, they’re going to walk over and take a look. Especially if that player, and the club, have already done the leg work to reach out to the coaches in the first place, which by the way is how 95% of the kids get recruited anyway.

Have DD that was born in August and was supposed to start her travel journey next season. Shes in 1st grade now but with this SY regroup she now will have to wait another season to play her age group unless she starts playing a year up.
