What color is the sky in your world? |
I don’t understand how you don’t realize your contradiction you just made? “In HS, nobody wants to play down.” “I never understand why people pay to let their kids play down”. As to MLSN biobanding kids, they are usually smaller so parents are happy to watch their kids not get hammered by bigger kids. Usually the biobands are middle pack or less in size. |
Parents will hold their kids back in middle school so they're 16 year old freshman in HS. They do this because it guarantees their kid a spot on whatever sports team because they're 2 years older than everyeone else in their grade. Its pretty simple to understand why parents to choose to cheat. BTW holdbacks have killed high level HS basketball and lacrosse. This is because table stakes at the highest levels is being 2 years older than everyone else. |
If they are held back it would make more sense that they are 1 year older on average? So a 16 year old freshmen playing with 15 year olds? 15 year old freshman already have to play sophomores that are 16. If their kids are good they would be playing varsity so 16 playing against 17/18 year olds? If they are small kids who aren’t athletic who cares if they are 16 playing against 16/15 year olds on JV? I think you make a bigger deal out of this than it actually is. No one is holding their kids back for soccer anyways? It’s mostly seen in basketball/football/wrestling. |
Your response is that... 1 year holdbacks are somehow better or different then 2 year stupid holdbacks and Soccer parents arent holding their kids back for a physical advantage. Both responses are 100% BS Holdbacks are cheating and Im glad that Soccer clubs are smart enough to force players to play with their age (not grade). Sorry Charlie go cheat somewhere else. |
HS Soccer is free, and no senior will play on the JV team, nor will juniors and sophomores play on the Frosh team. Obviously, the OP is mentioning only P2P club soccer, where parents pay the club and let their kids play down. If you see a contradiction, your reading comprehension is below average. |

Here's something interesting.
Big GA club had a club meeting with all the team managers regarding BY-SY. Initially they told all the team managers that Sept-Dec players would be moving from their current team to the grade below. They also said that Aug birthdays would have the option to play up or down a grade. Immediately all the team managers started freaking out because with older players that are currently going through recruitment their current number is how college coaches will know who they are. The team managers also brought up how can you allow an August birthday to play down when it would completely screw them for college recruiting. (Our school district starts in mid Aug) Apparently club leadership never thought of any of this so they decided to back down and said that all Sept-Dec players would have to choice to play down if they want to. They had no answer for Aug birthdays other than acknowledging the issue. Nobody really believes leadership will let players choose if they stay with a team or play down if they're a current trapped player. Consensus is that individual coaches will pick and choose the players they like and thats just how it will be. |
|
one other issue was brought up. How can you across the board force all Sept-Dec birthdays to play down when some teams might have 2 trapped keepers, Or an entire line of trapped defenders. What if one team had 6 trapped players and the team below only had 2?
Again it was obvious that the club wasnt thinking before relaying the change to the team managers. |

Hahahaha....
Exactly what I said would happen. Theres no way clubs will allow players to play on a grade down team when they're a year older in school. It just doesnt make sense because that player would be unrecruitable. Aug birthdays that didn't make the A team with your grade welcome to the B team with your grade. Clubs and apparently team managers aren't going to allow playing down a grade. I never thought about all the jersery number issues this is going to create. |
You are too optimistic. The player already had no chance to be recruited. So between B team older or A team younger, they will choose A team younger. No Aug. will choose to play B team older. We can make a bet on it after seeing so many parents pay to let their kids play down in order to stay in the A team. |
The issue with Aug players playing down a grade is easily solved. Leagues just need to implement a rule that says players must play on a team that thats predominantly their grade in school. |
Parents dont make roster decisions coaches do. It just doesn't make sense for clubs to let players play down. Short term wins but long term problems. |
|
Clubs do not make the age group rules. The leagues do and registration is validated by the state associations. Players can either tryout for the teams for the new age groups or try to play up, playing down will not be allowed.
It’s not up to the parents, clubs, coaches or team managers. |
Oh good we agree that Aug birthday players should not be playing down a grade even if technically they're able to depending on when their school starts. |
Name the club? My daughters GA club coach at Reds FC already told the 4 Aug to December players on the team two of which have Aug birthdays and are in different grades that all 4 will be eligible to play the same age group again next year or they can play up. |
