This is my first week. I'm lifting three times a week and I am already sore. I am doing it at home with a Swiss Ball, barbell and dumbbells that have adjustable weights.
Has anyone done NROLFW? Did you increase weight after every session, or every week? Did you drink a protein shake after? It is hard to believe that such a short amount of time working out can really make a difference, but I am sore. How long before you see results? |

Go OP! I wish I could shake every cardio junkie in DC and tell them that if they want to lose weight, build muscle, and/or alter their body composition, they need to hop off the treadmill and start lifting heavy!
I don't follow any lifting programs, I just work with a personal training. My understanding is that as long as you are getting a sufficient amount of protein for your weight/height, it doesn't matter what the source is. Women don't have the testosterone needed to really bulk up like guys do without a ton of work and supplements, so you don't need a ton of extra protein either. I saw results from lifting within weeks. Such a good feeling. |
New Rules of Lifting For Women. It's a totally awesome book that has a six month program. This 47 year old loves it. OP--there's a great group on Facebook. Lots of support including folks who will post videos and tips for proper form. |
This is just a mini rant and isn't necessarily directed at you, but some of us really like cardio and aren't doing it just to lose weight. I get anxious and moody when I haven't run for several days. Weightlifting doesn't do that at all. I definitely think that resistance training should be part of any exercise regimen (although I definitely have to force myself), but cardio is also necessary. Balance! |

OP here, thanks for the tip about Facebook. I'll check it out.
Results in weeks, huh? Yay! I am so looking forward to seeing results. Also I don't' want to be one of those 60+ yo women who can't open a jar of sauce because they have no upper body strength. |
