Oakton HS vs. Marshall

Anonymous
A good friend of mine is moving to the area with her HS-age kids. She's narrowed her housing search down to a house that feeds to Oakton and a house that feeds to Marshall.

The girl is athletic (soccer & swimming) and very bright (a couple AP classes already). The boy is a little more troubled, but good at heart. He is very into music and performing arts.

Any insights into what might be a better match for them?

Oakton would be a good match for the girl, but not the boy. Marshall would be good for the boy, but not the girl. I'd look for something in the Madison or McLean districts instead.

Marshall has 20 year old students, one of whom was just arrested for child pornography.

Do you know for a fact that Oakton does not have any 20 year old students? No seniors interested in freshman a mere 4 years younger?

Oakton has a popular swim team and Oakmarr is nearby. The Vienna area has a lot of performing arts options. Also the boy could take classes through the Fairfax Arts academy.

Both are fine. I think Oakton is better.

Marshall doesn't have AP classes so if she has already started that route she might want to go to Oakton. Otherwise, they are both nice schools. However, if you move into Marshall and she wants AP, I think she can attend Madison (assuming its the closest AP school) since it has AP. Marshall has the Academy which may be a good option for the boy.

Oakton is about 1000 kids bigger than Marshall.
Oakton is primarily Asian and White, Marshall is more diverse.
Oakton offers tha AP program, Marshall offers the IB program.
The average SAT score at both schools is pretty similar.

I think they're both great schools, and I would look at other factors like commuting time.

This is a great point. Since FCPS allows you to place in the nearest high school offering the alternate (AP or IB) program, buying a house that is in the Marshall district, but with McLean as the next closest school could be ideal and give them the choice for both kids.

Oakton is about 500 kids bigger than Marshall, not 1000.

Oakton is about 83% White/Asian, Marshall about 77% White/Asian.

The other stuff you wrote is correct.

Oakton is about 60% white and 20% Asian. Marshall is about 55% white, 19% Asian, 15% Hispanic.

Oakton has traditionally been a well regarded and rated school where as marshall recently, in the last 5 or so years was put in this high regard. Marshall has ib, a science engineering program and the commute is better . oakton is ap and has a long held tradition of excellence . You can verify the school test scores in http:/www.greatschools.net.

OP didn't mention a commute so how do you know which school offers a better commute?

I don't. But I DO know that MARSHALL HAS STUDENTS WHO ARE 20 YEARS OLD WHO ARE ALSO SEX PREDATORS. That is a known fact.

Nice spin, CNN.

Marshall HAD one student, who is 20 and is accused of child pornography involving a 16 year old classmate. That 20 year old is currently not a Marshall student, is in jail, and may be deported. No one even knows if that 20 year old was set to return to Marshall next year before all this started. Nor does anyone know for a fact if this offense took place at Marshall HS or one of the alternative HS programs in the county. The location is all based on his address and a Facebook page listing that he attended Marshall.
Regardless, it's over. Marshall will likely be the safest school for a while, as schools tend to overcorrect when stuff like this happens.

Must of marshall is closer in and closer to metros.

There are some anti marshall trolls that have mental issues just ignore them , they probably over paid for nearby districts and are mad
