| The trifecta of thread-hijacking, mind-numbing boosterism on DCUM consists of Pimmit Hills, Marshall HS and the Mosaic District. Of course people toss it back at the clowns when the opportunity presents itself, which is fairly often. |

Thank you for the insights! I do think they were leaning towards the Oakton house for other reasons (work commute, house aesthetics, etc.). Sounds like it would be a fine choice wrt the high school.
(my kids are very little so I'm clueless about high schools!) |
| Have them check out machine aquatics. We take lessons at their swim school in vienna, but they also have a great competitive swim program. Www.machineaquatics.com . I think one of their sites is at Oak Mar . |
Look you need to stop posting that. It can happen anywhere. I swim coach at Oak Marr in Oakton was just arrested but it doesn't mean that represents the community. I would never be complacent no matter where you live because they are everywhere (molesters). |
| Oakton is considered the better school, OP. Marshall attracts a rougher element, which you can see from posts on this forum. |
Marshall doesn't attract a rougher element, they just attract more criticism. It used to be ho-hum, and now it's a great school. People don't know what to do with that, so they dial their brains back to the 80s. |
| I think most would prefer Oakton given a choice. Nicer neighborhoods, stronger academics, better athletics. There's nothing wrong with Marshall, as far as I know, but its reputation really is not on par with Oakton's. |
| I wasn't aware Oakton has a reputation. I haven't really heard anything about it. |
I thought Virginia law stipulated that a student can only attend the "regular" high schools through 19. Once the student turns 20, there are alternative schools. |
|
Student may have turned 20 after the school year ended, or at the end of the year.
I do not know. But I think you would have to be two years behind to be 20 in HS. |
Marshall has an alternative program on its campus. Perhaps he is/was enrolled in that. |
|
Oakton, while nice, is way way too far out for daily commuting IMO. Marshall is merely too far out for daily commuting.
|
the Vienna metro is a 15 minute drive from my house in Oakton. Then it's 31 minutes to office downtown on the the Metro. So have to disagree with this statement. |
| OP here. My friend won't be working downtown and actually the Oakton location is better for them. |
| I'd avoid Marshall even if I were working next door. |
