tell me about cool pockets of houses that are lower priced...

...little neighborhoods or developments you'd recommend to a friend? We can't afford CC, or Arlington, the neighborhoods that seem most popular on DCUM.

what do you consider lower priced?
We live in Falls Church, Greenway Downs/Jefferson Village/City park homes neighborhood and absolutely love it. Lots of young families and wonderful neighbors. It's one of the few nice and reasonably priced neighborhoods inside the beltway, although recently prices have been quickly on the rise.

OP here--- under 600,000 for sure, and maybe lower than that. I guess we can technically afford more, but we just don't want to spend that much every month! It scares us to spend so much of our income on housing.

You can't afford Arlington on 600k??

We just moved into a little enclave of Rockville that I like so far, and it has houses under 600k.

It's the neighborhoods of Hungerford/West End Park/Woodley Gardens/College Gardens. East of 270, West of 355, right around Rockville Town Center. Feed into Beall or College Gardens elementary, or Richard Montgomery HS.

Walking distance or short drive to Rockville Town Center, close to Rockville or Twinbrook Metros, but also close to 270. Lots of little parks. Safe, seems to be a mix of ages and ethnicities.

It really depends a lot on where you work and what you want from a community.

We live in Western Fairfax in a neighborhood of homes where the highest sale price recently has been about $515K. It is a great, family friendly community with good schools and a library walking distance as well as access to plenty of nearby amenities off of 50, 66 and several other major arteries. The homes are between 1500 and 2200 sf with no basements, although a few have had additions and have a little more room than that.

I love our neighborhood. However, if you need to commute downtown, I would not recommend it.

Where do you commute to? That is a good starting point.

I have heard good things about Takoma Park, Mt. Rainier and Cheverly for close in to DC but affordable neighborhoods.

You must live in Greenbriar. I used to live right across 50 from there. Great neighborhood for families. Commute to DC is doable, but not fun. Dulles/Tysons/Reston is more manageable.
