tell me about cool pockets of houses that are lower priced...

My mother grew up in Flower Valley (funny!) but I would say the biggest downside to that area is that it's not close to major routes/highways. Except the ICC, but why bother counting that.

Pimmit Hills is not actually a bad choice. Its only criticism is that it's not pretty.

Other neighborhoods on this thread are also good choices. I actually loved the SS area, there are so many neat little corners.

It's close to 270 also (and...gasp...you can take the ICC to 270!).

Actually, Flower Valley is a great location to get all around the county using various non-highway options. Plus it's pretty close to both ends of the red line.

how about North Bethesda in Fernwood/Georgetown village? great schools and many ranchers in the sub-600k range. close to lots of amenities, walking distance to Ashburton ES, library, and shops. most of the homes were built in the 60's and I wouldn't say the neighborhood has tons of charm, but every house/yard is well maintained. lots of young families.

The Annandale neighborhoods that feed into Woodson.

The Annandale neighborhoods that feeds into the new Masonville Elementary school. Lot's of younger buyers are moving into the area.

I would bet that price is dated, or the house is so small it looks like it is for a midget.

In Mount Rainier, you can get a renovated, single family home for under $250,000. My neighbor's 5 bed/3 bath home just sold for $243,000. I paid $220,000 for my 5,000 sf 8 bed/3 full bath house, with a huge two story deck and large yard.

I am not this poster but wow that comment was uninformed. Mount Rainier is literally a stone's throw from the District line, which in no way justifies that particular vulgar term. It's in PG county just east of the city.
