I do think if you've spent your entire life being told that women are too stupid to have their own opinions and must do whatever their husbands say... and also that divorce is not an option as it would send you & your children to hell and make them bastards, it's just not that easy to shake that all off. I doubt she knew about the CP investigation. She probably thought this was all connected to the fraud investigation (which it probably originally was). He still has financial crimes lawyers.
